Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 25th of Kislev and those that followed.

We are now on the day of Zos Chanukah, which, as explained in Chassidus, has two interpretations. To translate this into practical service: a) Drawing down from the deepest power of the soul (Atik sheb'Nefesh), which is the power of pleasure, so that it influences actual deeds in daily conduct. b) Bringing down from the leading power among the inner faculties (Arich sheb'Nefesh, the power of will in the soul), so that it permeates the entire person and all his experiences.

To accomplish this in actual practice—which is connected with difficulties—one must access and reveal a deeper power from the G‑dly soul. In contrast, to protect oneself and one's feelings does not require such a power as is needed to connect with the external world. And according to the well-known saying: Kol HaGavoha Gavoha Biyoter Yored Lemata Mata Biyoter (the higher something is, the lower it can descend). As was discussed at the farbrengen on Shabbos Chanukah: in the summary of the maamar (Baruch She'asah Nissim, ch. 4), only the first interpretation is brought, which emphasizes what is essential and primary. That is indeed what a summary means—it brings only matters that are essential and not explanations or elaborations.

May Hashem grant success so that everyone fulfills the directives of Zos Chanukah according to the above-mentioned explanation from Chassidus for the entire coming year for good—to bring light into oneself, at one's doorway, and also outward (to one's family members and those close to him, as well as into the external world).

With blessing for good news in all mentioned above,
M. Schneersohn

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that Zos Chanukah calls for drawing out both our deepest pleasure and our guiding will to illuminate ourselves and our surroundings throughout the year—emphasizing action rooted in inner strength.
