...The source for what is written in Torah Or Beshalach (61d): Our Sages said, "One who wishes to accept upon himself the yoke of Heaven should relieve himself, wash his hands, put on tzitzis and tefillin"—so it is in Pri Etz Chaim and at the beginning of the AriZal's Siddur. And perhaps it is based on Zohar III 120b. Note that the Alter Rebbe in his Shulchan (ch. 2 sec. 8, first edition) brings the language of the Talmud (Berachos 15a) omitting tzitzis. Perhaps one can connect these two opinions with the matter of tzitzis at night and sleeping in a tallis katan. See also the ruling of tzt"z to Orach Chaim sec. 8; Bach and Perishah Orach Chaim end of sec. 8.
This letter is to Rabbi Ephraim Eliezer Yales, and was written on the margin of his letter from 12 Shevat 5721. Additional letters to him: above #7585, and those referenced in notes there.
The source for what is written: For in Talmud Berachos 14b, the word 'tzitzis' does not appear.
Summary
This letter explores various halachic sources regarding washing hands, tzitzis, and tefillin before accepting the yoke of Heaven, highlighting differences among authorities and their connection to practical observance such as wearing tzitzis at night.
