Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from 12 Iyar, with the pidyon nefesh that will be read at an auspicious time at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal: a) Regarding your question at the end of chapter one in Tanya: "And also good traits that are natural to all Jews such as compassion and acts of kindness come from her"—why did he not also count the trait of bashfulness? The reason is because this is not natural or innate; on the contrary, Jews are bold among the nations, and bashfulness develops later (see Nedarim 20a; Beitzah 25b).

b) Prior to this: "At the time one commits sins he is called a complete rasha (wicked person), and if afterwards he repents he is called a complete tzaddik (righteous person)"—what is his status before he repents? The ruling in Nigleh (revealed Torah law), regarding invalid witnesses, and in Chassidus is that sin creates a stain; before repentance this stain remains in his state, and so does the designation.

Regarding your notification about your grandson Shneor Zalman reaching bar mitzvah age: May it be G‑d's will that from thirteen for mitzvos he will grow to fifteen for Gemara study etc., as stated in Pirkei Avos chapter five. With blessings for good news and proper health.

Summary

The Rebbe explains that bashfulness is not an innate Jewish trait but develops later and clarifies that before teshuvah, a sinner retains the status and stain of his actions. He blesses continued growth for a grandson reaching bar mitzvah.
