Shalom u'Vrachah!

After a longer trip, your letter from the fourth night of Chanukah arrived, in which you write about the situation regarding your studies and exams, and the various considerations about the future.

As I wrote recently—and it seems it was also discussed when you were here—that after investing so much effort, time, energy, and money into something (whatever it may be), one must do everything possible to utilize it in the best way. Especially since this concerns a matter which, as I understand from your letter, most of the work has already been accomplished. It is certainly understandable that one should strive to complete also the remaining part so that the earlier efforts are not lost.

It is clear that it is difficult to give detailed instructions in this matter because much depends on many details—exams and possibilities. Also understandable is that if one cannot achieve a full hundred percent, then ninety is better than eighty and eighty better than seventy. According to what is possible and by estimating one's strengths and circumstances, choose the greatest achievement attainable after such long years of effort.

Having spent several years in this place and being connected with professors who know you—also for several years—and especially since your wife is with you (and according to our Sages' saying: "a man's wife is like his own self"), consulting with them will fulfill "salvation comes with many counselors," so that you may decide and act in this matter in the best way in all respects.

At an auspicious time, you and your household will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal; may it be G‑d's will that you report good news regarding this.

On this occasion, I want to draw your attention to the practice of reciting the daily portion of Tehillim (as divided for each day of the month) after davening in the morning; and on weekdays before davening in the morning to give a few coins to tzedakah. Your wife should continue the good custom of Jewish daughters by giving tzedakah every time before lighting candles on Erev Shabbos and Yom Tov. All these serve as channels and vessels for additional blessing from Hashem Yisbarach.

With blessing for good news in all mentioned above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches us to persevere in completing our efforts even if perfection isn't possible, consult trusted advisors for important decisions, and maintain daily spiritual practices like Tehillim and tzedakah as conduits for blessing.
