Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the sixth candle requesting a blessing for success in studies and emphasizing that Hanukkah is the time when Israel fought for the study of the holy Torah.

At an auspicious time, you will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzukal lehe nbagam zya"a, for the fulfillment of your heart's wishes for good.

But together with this, it is understood and also obvious that you must fulfill our Sages' instruction: "You have toiled—and then the promise will be fulfilled—and you have found." Similar to the war of Hanukkah days that you write about: the war was not against all forms of Torah study; rather, as we say in Al HaNissim—"to make them forget Your Torah" specifically. That is, they did not oppose Torah study as long as it was not engraved at the time with a sense of connection to the Giver of the Torah. Likewise regarding mitzvot—they did not oppose all mitzvot but specifically "the statutes of Your will," meaning mitzvot without an apparent reason. And for this Israel fought so that Torah study in general and observance of mitzvot—including those with reasons—would remain among them.

And similarly in our days: as stated in the Mishnah—for Torah to be preserved one’s fear [of Heaven] must precede his wisdom. The way to come to yirat shamayim and ahavat Hashem is as ruled by Rambam (Hilchot Yesodei HaTorah ch.2): how does one come to His awe? By contemplating the greatness of the Creator, blessed be He, etc.

May it be His will that you conduct yourself accordingly and also influence your friends in this matter.

Blessings for good news in all mentioned above, on behalf of my revered teacher and master shlita—Mazkir.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that true success in Torah study requires both diligent effort and a deep connection to its Divine source. Hanukkah reminds us to internalize yirat shamayim and inspire others toward heartfelt observance.
