Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 21st of Menachem Av, in which you write about what you have experienced and that for now you have not yet become engaged.
Regarding undesirable matters that occurred in the past, it is well known from our Torah of life that every person has the ability to correct and improve their situation from now on. True regret over the past together with a good resolution for the future is effective. Especially regarding shidduchim, there are two points to add here.
a) You should firmly resolve that when you marry, you will conduct your home as befits a daughter of Israel—each one called a daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, and Leah—by observing family purity, keeping Shabbat, eating kosher, etc., along with other mitzvos of the Torah. The Holy One Blessed be He, Who sees into the heart and knows you have truly decided and will act accordingly, will provide you with your appropriate match both materially and spiritually.
b) One must recognize reality as it is: there is no perfection in this world. Therefore do not search out or probe for flaws in those you meet for shidduchim—especially considering that the one searching is also not completely perfect. When looking at fellow Jews with a favorable eye and focusing on what is essential (good character traits, conduct according to Torah and mitzvah), then automatically one sees how secondary matters do not need to take up more space than they deserve. When the main point is complete, this tips the scale toward saying yes.
It is proper that after all the above, every weekday morning until you become engaged and marry at an auspicious time, you should set aside a few coins for charity.
Blessings for good news in all the above matters,
In the name of the Lubavitcher Rebbe shlita,
Secretary
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that sincere teshuvah can repair past mistakes and encourages focusing on core values rather than perfection when seeking a shidduch. Daily acts of charity are recommended as spiritual preparation for marriage.
