Haraha"g vavac"h iy"a oseik b-tzt"z Shalom Rabkin
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 28th of Elul with its attachment, in which you write and ask how to conduct yourself regarding matters where there are differences between the Arizal's nusach and the customs of the synagogue where you pray.
It is understood that regarding your own conduct—there is no reason for you to change—since this does not involve the issue of "lo titgodedu" (do not form separate groups), as is also explained in the ruling of the tzt"z on Orach Chaim at the end of siman 236. However, based on what is explained in several places—that one should change from Nusach Ashkenaz to Sefard or from Sefard to Nusach HaArizal (which is Nusach Chabad), but not the other way around—it is appropriate to try to introduce several customs (of course, in a pleasant manner). For example, regarding hakafot where our custom is three times—you should explain: what difference does it make to them if it will be three times? At most—announce that whoever wishes may participate in this; especially since hakafot are done after prayers and this does not "disturb" others.
I do not know how you conducted yourself regarding the shofar blasts, and it is surprising that you did not clarify this matter beforehand. For it seems their custom is not to blow one hundred sounds; yet even here you could have fulfilled the number one hundred—with the above explanation—and thus this would have reached (as explained in Likkutei Torah at the beginning of Parshat Shemini [Anriren]) also the other participants. This suffices.
With blessings for inscription [in the Book of Life] and a good final sealing, on behalf of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe shlita—secretary.
P.S. My letters with New Year blessings have surely already arrived. Most letters are from secretariat copies and some from facsimiles of the letter itself. They are not marked with notes unless their source is different or they were already printed in Likkutei Sichos.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that one should maintain their own nusach while introducing Chabad customs gently and respectfully within a community. Sensitivity and clear explanation foster unity without causing division or confusion among congregants.
