Supporting Students Who Wish to Study Only Torah Subjects

The Rebbe writes that if a student wishes to study only Torah subjects, one should support him as much as possible. Not doing so is akin to neglecting Torah study. Every Jew should help those who desire more Torah learning, especially talented students.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

... In your question regarding one of your students who wants to study in an institution where only sacred studies are taught, and you ask whether to assist him in this or do nothing. It is astonishing that there is any doubt or question about this matter. For in matters of Talmud Torah and the like, if one does not do everything possible—that is, as it ought to be done—in such a case it is considered a most severe form of neglecting Torah study, about which it is said, etc. (Even though at the other extreme, for someone who absolutely cannot do otherwise, he fulfills his obligation even with reciting one chapter in the morning and one at night; see there* the explanation of Admor HaZaken on how there is no contradiction here.) Accordingly, it is understood that anyone who yearns to learn even one more hour of our holy Torah—every Jew must strive as much as possible and help him. Especially since, as you write, we are speaking about someone talented and in the language of our Sages "seasoned"**.

Blessings for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.

...When he visited here... he related that his approach in educating his students at the yeshivah is to explain to them that the yeshivah program they follow is not the highest level; rather, it suits their previous education or their parents' requirements. Thus only a few hours are dedicated to Torah study, and they should aspire and strive at the first opportunity for more Torah learning at the expense of other studies. In this way he explained to them that his own son was sent to study at a yeshivah in the holy city of Jerusalem. And even here it seems there is no contradiction whatsoever if his student goes to study at a yeshivah where only sacred studies are taught all day long—contrary to what was argued against him.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that supporting students who wish to devote themselves fully to Torah study is not just permissible but obligatory. One should encourage and assist every effort toward increased Torah learning, especially when dealing with gifted individuals.
