The Rebbe addresses the question of when Shabbat ends, noting that waiting times vary by location and season. He references the rulings of the Alter Rebbe and local custom in New York, emphasizing both halachic requirements and communal practicality.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from Wednesday, in which you address a question that many have discussed regarding the time for Motzaei Shabbat. You conclude that from Shulchan Aruch Siman 293:1 it appears one must wait seventy-two minutes.

It is known that the ruling of our Rebbe the Alter Rebbe (the posek in the hidden dimension of Torah) and the Shulchan Aruch (the posek in the revealed dimension of Torah) is that this waiting time is not uniform throughout the year or in all places. See Seder Hachnasat Shabbat by the Alter Rebbe printed in his Siddur; therefore, in every place one must know the calculation according to its horizon, and even within a year there are differences.

What I have seen practiced here in NY is to wait about fifty minutes after sunset. However, it is understood that I do not take responsibility for this. In general, it is known that there is merit in delaying Motzaei Shabbat. However, in synagogue it should be arranged so most of the congregation can manage. Clearly this relates to stringency but not to an actual prohibition according to halachah—and Shabbat is great as it equals all mitzvot.

With honor and blessing for good health and good news in both general and personal matters—which are interdependent.

Summary

The Rebbe explains that Motzaei Shabbat timing depends on local calculation and season. While stringency is praiseworthy, practical considerations for the community are important; one should follow local custom within halachic guidelines.
