Shalom u'Vrachah!
In reply to your letter of the 18th of Cheshvan, in which you write the main points of what you have gone through until now: that there was in this a change from one extreme to the other, but that you then set your heart to return to the path of our Torah, תורת חיים "a Torah of life" (Siddur, Sim Shalom), and its mitzvos, and you have taken root in this path.
May it be G‑d's will that you not be impressed by what sometimes seems to you to be some difficulties in walking this path. For in the vast majority of cases this is nothing but imagination; and even in the little that has some reality, the concealment is less, and the obstacles fewer, than on another path. For on a path that is not the path of G‑d's Torah it is impossible for a Jew to succeed (and this includes inner, spiritual satisfaction too), since it is contrary to his true nature. Even though at times the bribe of fleeting pleasure מעוור עיני חכמים "blinds the eyes of the wise" (cf. כי השחד יעור עיני חכמים "for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise," Devarim 16:19) and it seems that one is content, אחריתו מרה כלענה "its end is bitter as wormwood" (cf. ואחריתה מרה כלענה "but her end is bitter as wormwood," Mishlei 5:4), as explained in a number of places, and as one sees even more tangibly. Fortunate is he that he now walks in the path of Torah and mitzvah; and may it be G‑d's will that he rise מחיל אל חיל "from strength to strength" (Tehillim 84:8) and from level to level, and that it be good for him both materially and spiritually.
With blessing for good news,
On behalf of his holy eminence the Rebbe, shlita
Summary
This letter encourages one who has returned to the path of Torah and mitzvos not to be daunted by its seeming difficulties: most are imaginary, and those that are real are fewer than on any other path. A path against a Jew's true nature cannot bring him success, and even its fleeting pleasure, which blinds the eyes of the wise, ends in bitterness; fortunate is he who walks in the way of Torah, and may he go from strength to strength, materially and spiritually.
