Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 22nd of Iyar, I was pleased to read that you are striving to influence those around you in the army regarding matters of Yiras Shamayim. Surely you will strengthen and increase your efforts in this for days to come. Since the measure of good is greater than that of punishment—as our Sages say, in the footsteps of Mashiach there is no day whose curse is not greater than the previous—how much more so must we increase and increase again in drawing down blessing each and every day. This is not only to nullify the curse, G‑d forbid, but also to add light and vitality and bring closer the end of our exile, each person according to his ability.

Regarding what you write—that you feel your words do not come from the heart etc.—a) It is known that my father-in-law, the Rebbe, said one must not speak lashon hara about any Jew; therefore, one should not speak negatively about oneself either. b) Even if your claim is correct, your environment and those you influence are not obligated to suffer or lack because of it. It is enough damage that you cause yourself by such thoughts; do not add harm by causing others loss as well. Therefore, G‑d forbid to stop your outreach and words of inspiration—in fact, you should add more explanation as above. At the same time, you must exert yourself in ways appropriate for your nefesh ha'elokis (G‑dly soul), nefesh habehamis (animal soul), and physical body—since a person knows his own situation at least somewhat—so he can find effective means to reach the desired goal. Relying on our Sages' ruling: "If you labor and find [success], believe it," surely you will succeed in this. Especially since the merit of many whom you inspire towards Torah and mitzvos assists you.

This should be your comfort in your situation—relying on Rambam's explanation cited often in Chassidus: that essentially every Jew desires to fulfill G‑d's will; only his evil inclination fights him and sometimes forces him not to act properly. See also Tanya chapter 41 (page 58a): "But uniting one's soul and merging it with G‑d's light—to be one with Him—every Jew truly desires this with all his heart and soul from the natural love hidden in every Jewish heart to cleave to Him." This applies directly to our matter.

I await good news that you continue your work bringing Jewish hearts closer to their Father in Heaven—and that gradually you also feel improvement in your own state.

Accordingly, it is also clear how to answer your question whether to continue your rabbinic position: certainly continue it! Strive with even greater strength in good deeds and proper effort—you will surely succeed...

Blessings for receiving the Torah with joy and inwardness.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that one must persist in inspiring others even when feeling personally inadequate. Speaking negatively about oneself is discouraged; instead, focus on positive action and trust that sincere effort brings success—especially when helping others connect with Torah and mitzvos.
