To the worshippers of the Nusach Ari synagogue of Albany Park in Chicago, may G‑d be upon them for life.
Shalom u'Vrachah!
With pleasure I received, through the vavac"h iy"a nu"n one involved in tzt"z etc. Moreinu HaRav Avraham Hanzburg, the check for the Maos Chittim fund under my auspices. I am sending my blessing to all the donors that may Hashem repay them many times over. And because they participate so that "Kol Dichfin Yeitei Veyochol Kol Ditzrich Yeitei Veyifsach" (Let all who are hungry come and eat; let all who are needy come and celebrate Pesach), may Hashem help them and their entire families to have a kosher and joyous festival.
Pesach is mentioned throughout the year since in various prayers we say "Zecher L'Yetzias Mitzrayim" (a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt). Therefore, even though this charity is connected only to Pesach like Maos Chittim, nevertheless we must remember it all year long—both literally, that one must give charity not only for Pesach but also throughout the entire year (which surely does not need further mention), and even more importantly: one must give charity not only with money but also by doing acts of kindness with another Jew—man or woman—giving one's time and effort and influencing others to do likewise.
Another detail in charity: certainly if we are compassionate about a Jew's body, how much more so should we have mercy on his soul. When you see that his soul is bare of mitzvos or hungry for Torah, you must help him in this as our Sages say in Tanna D'bei Eliyahu Rabbah chapter 27: "Ki Tireh Arom V'Chisiso" (If you see someone naked, clothe him)—how? If you see someone lacking words of Torah, teach him and encourage him in mitzvos.
With blessings for a kosher and joyous Pesach to all worshippers of the synagogue.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that giving tzedakah is not limited to Pesach but should continue all year—both with money and by personally helping others physically and spiritually. True compassion means caring for both body and soul by sharing Torah and mitzvos as well as material support.
