Shalom u'Vrachah!
I was pleased to receive your letter from the 22nd of Teves, and as you requested, I mentioned you during the farbrengen on the 24th of Teves, the yahrzeit of our great Rebbe. As you also requested, your name was recorded among those participating in the division of Shas.
In response to your question about which tractate I took upon myself in this division: they are Tractates Sukkah and Sanhedrin, G‑d willing.
So as not to waste paper, I am copying here Chapter One from what was said at the farbrengen, based on the story that when the Maggid first welcomed our Rebbe (the Alter Rebbe) to Mezritch, he arranged for his son "the Malach" to learn Chassidus with our Rebbe, while our Rebbe would teach "the Malach" Nigleh (revealed Torah). When they began their study with "Me'eimatai...", and our Rebbe began explaining the Mishnah, the Malach interpreted "Me'eimatai" as coming from a sense of awe and fear.
This connects the beginning of Shas with its end (since in this division we also divide up orders of Mishnayos; even though the completion was with Tractate Niddah, they are all connected). The conclusion of Mishnah is: 'The Holy One did not find a vessel that holds blessing for Israel except peace.' Peace and unity among all Jews—as explained also in Tanya chapter 32: 'Bless us our Father (when) we are all as one.'
True unity among people in general—and especially among Jews—is impossible if there is any ulterior motive or benefit involved; then one is not truly united with another but seeks benefit for oneself. True unity is only possible as explained in Tanya chapter 32: because all souls are equal and have one Father—because their root is in one G‑d.
As explained in Chassidus, the root of souls is even higher than Torah and mitzvos. As our Sages say at the beginning of Bereishis Rabbah: 'The thought of Israel preceded everything—even Torah—as it says: Speak to the Children of Israel.'
This is why Shas begins with Kriyas Shema and ends with 'the vessel that holds blessing is peace.' Peace comes through saying Shema—'Hashem Echad' (G‑d is One)—but for this declaration to be true it must come through 'Me'eimatai', through accepting upon oneself the yoke (kabbalas ol), not just through intellect or even holy understanding.
This brief explanation should suffice for now.
With blessings for success in your holy work.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true unity and peace among Jews come only when there are no personal interests involved—only then can we become a vessel for G‑d's blessings. This unity reflects our shared Divine source and elevates all aspects of Torah study and mitzvah observance.
