It is customary to recite the Selichos during Shacharis.
When reciting Selichos before Shacharis, or if Tachanun was not said during Shacharis, begin with "Selach lanu"; otherwise begin with "Kaveh kivinu."
Forgive us, our Father, for in our great foolishness we have erred; pardon us, our King, for our iniquities are many.
G‑d, You are slow to anger, and You are called the Master of mercy, and You have taught the way of repentance. Remember today, and every day, the greatness of Your mercy and Your kindnesses toward the descendants of Your beloved ones. Turn to us in mercy, for You are the Master of mercy. With supplication and prayer we come before You, as You made known to the humble one [Moshe] of old. Turn back from Your fierce anger, as it is written in Your Torah. In the shadow of Your wings may we take shelter and find lodging, as on the day when the L‑rd descended in the cloud. Pass over transgression and blot out guilt, as on the day when He stood with him there. Give ear to our cry and hearken to our words, as on the day when he called out in the Name of the L‑rd, and there it is said:
The following, until unchaltanu, is recited only when praying with a minyan
And the L‑rd passed before him and proclaimed:
L‑rd, L‑rd, benevolent G‑d, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in kindness and truth;
keeping kindness for thousands of generations, forgiving iniquity, transgression and sin, and cleansing.
Pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your own possession.
Gently strike the left side of your chest (over the heart) with a closed fist at the words
"we have sinned" and "we have transgressed"
Forgive us, our Father, for we have sinned; pardon us, our King, for we have transgressed. For You, my L‑rd, are good and forgiving, and abounding in kindness to all who call upon You.
We hoped intently in the L‑rd, and He inclined to us and heard our cry.
Indeed, in the path of Your judgments, L‑rd, we have hoped in You; for Your Name and for Your remembrance is the longing of our soul.
As a father has compassion on his children, so, L‑rd, have compassion on us.
Salvation belongs to the L‑rd; may Your blessing be upon Your people forever.
The L‑rd of hosts is with us; the G‑d of Jacob is our stronghold forever.
L‑rd of hosts, happy is the man who trusts in You.
L‑rd, save us; may the King answer us on the day we call.
Pardon, please, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your kindness, as You have forgiven this people from Egypt until now. And there it is said:
And the L‑rd said: I have pardoned, as you have asked.
Incline Your ear, my G‑d, and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolation and the city upon which Your Name is called; for it is not because of our righteousness that we lay our supplications before You, but because of Your abundant mercy.
My L‑rd, hear; my L‑rd, forgive; my L‑rd, listen and act, do not delay, for Your own sake, my G‑d, for Your Name is called upon Your city and upon Your people.
A selichah arranged in alphabetical order; at the end is signed the author's name: Menachem son of Rabbi Machir, may he live, Amen and Amen.
Our G‑d and G‑d of our fathers:
When a man rose up against us, anguish seized us and we trembled.
When he attached himself to a godless kingdom, we nearly stumbled and fell.
They resolved to sell us — the one with the mound and the one with the ditch — with none to support us.
They said, "Come, let us cut them off from being a nation, so that the name of Israel will be remembered no more."
My eyes were raised on high; I called to You against my enemies who sought to curse.
Cut off name and remnant, and let the name [of the wicked] rot.
And the foe who oppressed me with the plots that they plotted against Yaakov —
they said, "G‑d will not see, the G‑d of Yaakov will not understand."
He afflicted and grieved the scattered ones, but not from His heart, to destroy them.
They had cherished Him of old, and He chastised them by the removal of the ring, to bring them to entreat Him.
He fulfilled His good word before the eyes of the nations, to raise them up:
"In the land of their enemies I did not despise them nor reject them to destroy them."
He made known an allusion to the events for the people humbled in the dust, through the one called the myrtle.
"I will surely hide" is written [an allusion to Esther], and "pure myrrh" [an allusion to Mordechai] from the orchard of Scripture,
to bring to an end Haman the villain, alluded to in "Is it from the tree?"
"In place of the thornbush the cypress shall rise, and in place of the nettle the myrtle shall rise."
The one who heeds false words wrote an accusation that brought grief.
He wrapped himself in the garments of the Sanctuary service, when he erred in counting the term [of the exile].
He arranged to make use of the vessels of the House of hewn stone among vessels of diverse kinds;
"and the Satan also came among them to present himself."
The people found in Shushan, when they ate of the feast of the one who would bring ruin upon them —
he opened his mouth to accuse them, and to deliver them into the hand of the one who paid for their sale.
The Rock agreed to write a decree to destroy their hope:
"I said I would scatter them, I would make their memory cease from mankind."
The holy angels of peace weep bitterly with a cry:
"Merciful One, look to the covenant, and do not annul it and cast it far away."
The Heritage [the Torah] heard, and put on garments of widowhood and anguish;
"she put her hand on her head and went along, crying out."
The Tishbite [Eliyahu] put a girdle of sackcloth about his loins as a binding;
he hastened and informed the three Patriarchs sleeping in Machpelah;
he urged the shepherd [Moshe]: "Why are you asleep? Rouse yourself!
Arise, call to your G‑d; perhaps He will give thought to us."
He told Bilshan [Mordechai] of the seal of clay that had been made;
from Nineveh they learned how, after a decree, to turn aside wrath.
The son of Kish knocked on the doors of the house of study;
"he covered himself with sackcloth and sat on the ashes."
He sat the children before him for three days, thirsting and starving,
so that with the voice of Yaakov the hands of the brazen one would be weakened.
His hands were steadfast toward G‑d: "Save me from disgrace,
lest he come and strike me, mother with children."
On this side and on that — the children of my steadfast forefathers and my masters —
all of them cried out, and their outcry rose up to the L‑rd.
When the sound of their cry came before Him, G‑d asked:
"What is this sound of the sheep in My ears?"
The shepherd [Moshe] answered Him: "They are the little ones, the holy seed.
O G‑d, rescue those taken to death from the evil enemy!"
The Gracious One's compassion was stirred, and He was moved to weep over what had happened;
"and when the King of Israel read the letter, he tore it."
The Jew [Mordechai] hanged the children below and their father above,
each one within three cubits, with the fourth left open in the air.
He beheld double vengeance, and rejoiced, and uttered praise:
"Me he restored to my position, and him he hanged."
Esther wrote with all authority that it be read as a Hallel by those who give thanks;
on high they ratified what the beloved ones accepted below;
a banner is raised to publicize the miracle, as then they bore witness to His wonders:
"At this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews."
Almighty King, who sits on the throne of mercy and acts with kindness.
He pardons the iniquities of His people.
He removes the sins one by one.
He grants abundant pardon to sinners and forgiveness to transgressors.
He deals charitably with all flesh and spirit.
He does not repay them according to their evil.
G‑d, You taught us to recite the Thirteen Attributes.
Remember for us today the covenant of the Thirteen Attributes,
as You made known to the humble one [Moshe] of old.
as it is written: The L‑rd descended in the cloud and stood with him there.

Gently strike the left side of your chest (over the heart) with a closed fist at the words

Forgive us, our Father, for we have sinned; pardon us, our King, for we have transgressed.
For You, my L‑rd, are good and forgiving, and abounding in kindness to all who call upon You.
For with You is the source of life; in Your light we see light.
When we call, answer us, G‑d of our salvation; in distress You have brought us relief; be gracious to us and hear our prayer.
And now, I pray, let the power of my L‑rd be great, as You have spoken, saying:
As a father has compassion on his children, so, L‑rd, have compassion on us.
Salvation belongs to the L‑rd; may Your blessing be upon Your people forever.
The L‑rd of hosts is with us; the G‑d of Jacob is our stronghold forever.

Our G‑d and G‑d of our fathers:
You are the G‑d who performs wonders;
among the nations You made known the might of Your awesome deeds;
with Your arm You redeemed Your people from hardships;
You crushed their foes with deadly diseases.
The enemy, when he rose up to stir up strife,
plotted to cut off the blossoms of the roses;
he schemed to weigh out silver to the treasuries of the masters,
in place of the hundred talents of the sockets.
You commanded Your lambs to give their shekels early;
You know what is to come, and You sought out those who are diligent,
to provide a quenching for the burning flame,
so that those taken to death were remembered for life.
The idol — "the covering too narrow" — when they had bowed to it in earlier times,
they were handed over to have their tendrils and vines cut off;
snares surrounded them on every side;
their eyes were lifted to You, and in Your shelter they were hidden.
The lot was turned about, so that they ruled over their enemies;
the gallows prepared received the Agagite;
He who takes aim and swallows up "the covering that is cast" [over the nations],
wrapping in darkness, among the desolate, those who contended with the people.
Words of peace and truth were written to every quarter;
the might of salvation — Rock and stronghold;
the plunderer was plundered, and caught in his own net;
my slanderer was swept away, cut off and crushed.
They made celebrations and established them for the generations;
the Scriptural mentions [of Amalek] they made threefold, but not fourfold;
they were agreed upon on high, and below they set them firm;
in the Book it is engraved for what reason they established them.
Your hand is raised high to forgive transgressors;
the Jew [Mordechai] and Hadassah You raised up as saviors;
their righteousness endures forever, as a delight;
the depth of their glory is to be recalled by those who were saved.
Be zealous for Your Name, awesome and holy;
behold Your vineyard, torn down and trampled;
gather our scattered ones, and a new song will be sung to You;
establish them and revive them with the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash.
And as You performed awesome wonders in those days,
work wondrous, everlasting salvation with us;
let us find atonement and consolation before You.
G‑d, King, who sits upon the throne of mercy,
Almighty King, who sits on the throne of mercy and acts with kindness.
He pardons the iniquities of His people.
He removes the sins one by one.
He grants abundant pardon to sinners and forgiveness to transgressors.
He deals charitably with all flesh and spirit.

Forgive us, our Father, for we have sinned; pardon us, our King, for we have transgressed.
For You, my L‑rd, are good and forgiving, and abounding in kindness to all who call upon You.
The following paragraphs are recited responsively. The chazzan says the first paragraph, followed by the congregation, and the congregation leads all subsequent paragraphs.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
You are enthroned upon the praises of Israel;
You hearken to their cry and listen to their song;
You plan and prepare the healing before the blow,
to do good to those You acquired and to settle their dwellings.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
The oppressor and foe sharpened his eyes;
he opened his mouth wide to swallow up His humble ones;
he plotted, in his tranquility, to destroy the assembly of His multitudes;
the decree to annihilate the treasured nation he engraved in his letters.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
You who take vengeance on adversaries and bear grudges against enemies,
You measured out to them their own measure, as they had acted wickedly toward the beloved ones;
the warrior and his descendants were hung up on the gallows,
strung up and impaled like a string of fish.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
On the day that the oppressors hoped
to bring slaughter upon the guarded people,
the decree was reversed, and corpses fell;
the defeated and banished were seized with rage and fury.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
And so may Your Name be exalted and uplifted;
Your majesty covers the heavens of heavens;
the downtrodden, who were given over to plunder, exalt You;
Your praise covers the earth and its farthest ends.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
Consider our meditation now, and look upon our distress;
bring us back to Your rest, for Your hand is not too short.
Master, we have called to You out of the straits;
please bring us out into relief and release us from distress.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.
Increase greatly Your pardon for us;
hear our prayer and remove what is unseemly;
may those who oppress us make peace with us, and cast our iniquities into the depths;
do not withhold Your mercies from us.
Few in number, we have come to entreat Your presence;
to the cry of the downcast do not close Your ear;
heed their supplication from Your heavenly abode.
As in the days of the myrrh and the myrtle [Mordechai and Esther] You saved Your children.

Remember Your mercies, L‑rd, and Your kindnesses, for they have existed forever.
Remember us, L‑rd, when You show favor to Your people; recall us with Your salvation.
Remember Your congregation which You acquired long ago, the tribe of Your inheritance which You redeemed, this Mount Zion where You dwelt.
Remember, L‑rd, the affection of Jerusalem; never forget the love of Zion.
You will arise and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to be gracious to her; the appointed time has come.
Remember, L‑rd, against the children of Edom the day of Jerusalem, when they said: Raze it, raze it, down to its very foundation!
Remember Abraham, Isaac and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Yourself and told them: I will multiply your descendants like the stars of the heavens, and all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.
Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; do not regard the stubbornness of this people, nor its wickedness, nor its sin.
Remember for us the covenant of the Patriarchs, as You said: I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and also My covenant with Abraham I will remember, and I will remember the land.
Remember for us the covenant of the early generations, as You said: I will remember for them the covenant of the early generations, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt before the eyes of the nations, to be their G‑d; I am the L‑rd.
Deal with us as You promised us: And even so, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not despise them nor abhor them to destroy them, to annul My covenant with them, for I am the L‑rd their G‑d.
Bring back our captivity and have compassion on us, as it is written: The L‑rd your G‑d will bring back your captivity and have compassion on you, and He will again gather you from all the nations among which the L‑rd your G‑d has scattered you.
Gather our dispersed, as it is written: Even if your dispersed are at the ends of the heavens, from there the L‑rd your G‑d will gather you, and from there He will take you.
Wipe away our transgressions like a mist and like a cloud, as it is written: I have wiped away your transgressions like a mist, and your sins like a cloud; return to Me, for I have redeemed you.
Wipe away our transgressions for Your sake, as You said: I, I am He who wipes away your transgressions for My sake, and your sins I will not remember.
Make our sins white as snow and as wool, as it is written: Come now, let us reason together, says the L‑rd; if your sins be like scarlet, they shall become white as snow; if they be red as crimson, they shall become like wool.
Sprinkle pure water upon us and purify us, as it is written: I will sprinkle pure water upon you and you shall be pure; from all your impurities and from all your idols I will purify you.
Have mercy on us and do not destroy us, as it is written: For the L‑rd your G‑d is a merciful G‑d; He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.
Open our heart to love Your Name, as it is written: The L‑rd your G‑d will open your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the L‑rd your G‑d with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.
Be found by us when we seek You, as it is written: From there you will seek the L‑rd your G‑d, and you will find Him, if you search for Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
Bring us to Your holy mountain and make us joyful in Your house of prayer, as it is written: I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted on My altar, for My House shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations.
The Ark is opened
The chazzan and then the congregation recite the following four verses
Hear our voice, L‑rd our G‑d; have pity and mercy on us, and accept our prayer with mercy and favor.
Bring us back to You, L‑rd, and we will return; renew our days as of old.
Do not cast us away from Your presence, and do not take Your holy spirit from us.
Do not cast us off in old age; when our strength fails, do not forsake us.
Do not forsake us, L‑rd our G‑d; do not be far from us.
Show us a sign for good, so that those who hate us may see it and be ashamed, because You, L‑rd, have helped us and comforted us.
Give ear to our words, L‑rd; consider our meditation.
May the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart be acceptable before You, L‑rd, our Rock and our Redeemer.
For in You, L‑rd, we have put our hope; You will answer, my L‑rd, our G‑d.
The Ark is closed
When saying Selichos during Shacharis, continue with "Meshiach."
Our G‑d and G‑d of our fathers, may our prayer come before You, and do not turn away from our supplication; for we are not so brazen and stiff-necked as to say before You, L‑rd our G‑d and G‑d of our fathers, that we are righteous and have not sinned. But indeed, we and our fathers have sinned.
We have transgressed, we have acted perfidiously, we have robbed, we have slandered. We have acted perversely and wickedly, we have willfully sinned, we have done violence, we have imputed falsely. We have given evil counsel, we have lied, we have scoffed, we have rebelled, we have provoked, we have been disobedient, we have committed iniquity, we have wantonly transgressed, we have oppressed, we have been obstinate. We have committed evil, we have acted perniciously, we have acted abominably, we have gone astray, we have led others astray.
We have strayed from Your good precepts and laws, and it has not profited us. You are just in all that has come upon us, for You have acted truthfully, and it is we who have acted wickedly.
We have acted wickedly and transgressed, therefore we have not been saved. Place it in our heart to abandon the path of wickedness, and hasten deliverance for us,
as it is written by the hand of Your prophet:
"Let the wicked man forsake his way and the man of iniquity his thoughts, and let him return to the L‑rd, and He will have mercy on him, and to our G‑d, for He will abundantly forgive."
Your righteous anointed one said before You: Who can discern inadvertent errors? Cleanse me of hidden faults.
Cleanse us, L‑rd our G‑d, of all our transgressions, purify us of all our impurities, and sprinkle pure water upon us and purify us, as it is written by Your prophet: I will sprinkle pure water upon you and you shall be pure; from all your impurities and from all your idols I will purify you.
Your people and Your inheritance, hungry for Your goodness, thirsting for Your kindness, longing for Your salvation — let them recognize and know that mercy and forgiveness belong to the L‑rd our G‑d.
