לקראת יום ההולדת, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי לשנת בריאות והצלחה לאריכות ימים ושנים טובות.
וידוע (תו"א יח, ד) דיוק אדה"ז בזה -
ליום
שכולו ארוך שגם בתחילתו הוא ארוך, שבזה תתורץ הקושי' שלכאורה מהו ענין הנוסח דאריכות ימים ושנים, כיון שימים בכלל שנים. אלא הפירוש הוא שכל יום ויום מהשנים טובות - הוא יום ארוך, היינו שהוא ממולא בתוכן טוב שעושה את היום לאריכות גדולה ועד לאין שיעור. וכמו שרואים במוחש, שלפעמים ברגע אחד, ובפרט רגע של שמחה גדולה,
ששמחה
פורץ גדר והגבלה, הרי היא חוי' מלאה תוכן עד בלי גבול.
כרגיל בבני ישראל לקשר כל ענין בזמן המיוחד בו נמצא, הרי נקודה מיוחדת בשנה זו שמתחילה

As your birthday approaches, I hereby express my blessing for a year of health and success for long and good days and years.
It is known (see Tanya Iggeres HaKodesh 18:4) the explanation of the Alter Rebbe regarding this—that a day that is entirely long means that even its beginning is long. This answers the question: what is meant by the phrase 'long days and years,' since days are included in years? The explanation is that every single day of these good years is a long day—that is, it is filled with good content that makes the day greatly extended, even immeasurably so.
As we see in reality: sometimes in a single moment—especially a moment of great joy, since joy breaks through all boundaries and limitations—it becomes an experience filled with unlimited content.
As is customary among Bnei Yisrael to connect every matter to the special time in which one finds oneself: there is a unique point in this year that begins with Rosh Hashanah falling on Shabbos; this year is a 'Shabbos year for Hashem.' The Rosh Hashanah for learning Chassidus and its ways—Yud Tes Kislev, the liberation of our master the Alter Rebbe and the yahrzeit of the Maggid of Mezritch—this year marks two hundred years since his passing and also falls on Shabbos.
And Shabbos represents delight ('And you shall call Shabbos delight') and rest; so may it be for you and all yours.
