הסיפור
של חכמינו זכרונם לברכה בנוגע להיהודי הראשון, הוא אברהם אבינו, וזה לשונו: "אמר רבי לוי, בשעה שהי' אברהם מהלך בארם נהרים ובארם נחור ראה אותן אוכלים ושותים ופוחזים. אמר הלואי לא יהא לי חלק בארץ הזאת. כיון שהגיע לסולמה של צור, ראה אותם עסוקין בניכוש בשעת הניכוש, בעידור בשעת העידור (עוסקים בעבודה), אמר הלואי יהא חלקי בארץ הזאת. אמר לו הקדוש ברוך הוא,
לזרעך
אתן את הארץ הזאת" (בראשית רבה לט, ח).
וככל עניני התורה, תורת חיים ותורה נצחית, כן הסיפורים במדרשי רבותינו ז"ל הוראה בכל הזמנים בכל המקומות. וההוראה מובנת.

As we approach the new year, which is coming upon us and all Israel for good and blessing, I wish to express my blessing to you and all yours: may you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year in both material and spiritual matters, and may all the requests of your heart for good be fulfilled in all areas you mentioned in your letter.

P.S. The story told by our Sages of blessed memory about the first Jew—Avraham Avinu—is remarkable. It says: Rabbi Levi said that when Avraham was traveling through Aram Naharayim and Aram Nachor, he saw people eating, drinking, and behaving frivolously. He said: "May I have no share in this land." When he reached Sulama shel Tzur, he saw people busy weeding at the time of weeding and hoeing at the time of hoeing (engaged in work). He said: "May my portion be in this land." The Holy One, blessed be He, said to him: "To your descendants I will give this land" (Bereishis Rabbah 39:8). As with all matters of Torah—which is a Torah of life and an eternal Torah—so too are the stories in our Sages' Midrashim a lesson for all times and places. And the lesson is clear.
