In my opinion, greetings and blessings!
It is clear that under no circumstances should (any of) the Divine Names be made the subject of a doctoral thesis—due to reasons of feeling, dry halachah, and because it would break boundaries for others who might then seek permission to write a paper on this topic, and so on. In the language of our Sages: his great reward will be for refraining from making this his doctoral topic, and he should choose a completely different subject.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that using Divine Names as an academic thesis topic is forbidden for both emotional and halachic reasons. Choosing not to pursue such a subject brings great merit and upholds respect for holiness.
