חכמינו ז"ל מעשה הוא העיקר, שבודאי זהו גם כן הקו בהנהגתם בחיי היום-יום, בטוחני אשר ההתרשמות האמורה תתבטא בענינים של מעשה בפועל, זאת אומרת הנהגה על פי תורת החסידות הדורשת תוספת הידור בקיום המצוות, ובפרט במצות
תלמוד
תורה שהיא כנגד כולם, להוסיף בהתמדה ושקידה וחיות. והרי
אין
לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
ובפרט כשהדברים אמורים בנוגע לבני נוער, שהדרישה מהם גדולה פי כמה, הא' מפני שאין להם בילבולים מצד דאגת פרנסה, והב' מפני שאלו הן השנים שבהן מניחים ומבצרים את היסוד לכל החיים, וכדוגמתו בבנין כפשוטו, שכל חוזק הבנין, ואפילו יופיו ושיכלולו וכולי, תלויים ביסוד חזק ומוצק שיוכל לעמוד בפני כל שינויים והזדעזעויות וכולי.
שלכן כדאית כל השתדלות והתאמצות להשקיע יותר ויותר מרץ וחיות משך שנים יקרות אלו לחזק יסודות התורה והמצוה שהן היסודות האמתיים והנצחיים לכל השנים הבאות,
ימי
שנותינו שבעים שנה ובגבורות שמונים שנה
והיו
ימיו מאה ועשרים שנה.
בודאי יודעים על דבר תקנת שיעור תהלים חדשי לומר בכל יום אחר תפלת שחרית, ונוהגים כן.
מהראוי שאלו שלא בדקו תפלין שלהם תוך י"ב חודש, יעשו כן עכשו.

I received your letter pleasantly, in which you write about your impression from the talk you heard from your esteemed principal on Yud Kislev regarding the teachings of Chabad Chassidus and its matters.
Based on our Sages' saying that action is the main thing, which is certainly also your guiding principle in daily life, I am confident that this impression will be expressed in actual deeds — meaning conduct according to the teachings of Chassidus that demand extra care in fulfilling mitzvos. Especially in the mitzvah of Torah study, which is equal to all others — to increase diligence, persistence, and vitality.
Indeed, nothing stands in the way of willpower. This is particularly true regarding youth: first, because they are not distracted by concerns of earning a livelihood; second, because these are the years when one lays and fortifies the foundation for all of life. Just as with a building — its strength and even its beauty and perfection depend on a strong and solid foundation that can withstand all changes and tremors.
Therefore it is worthwhile to invest every effort and energy during these precious years to strengthen the foundations of Torah and mitzvos — which are the true and eternal foundations for all future years: "The days of our years are seventy years; with strength eighty years," and "may his days be one hundred and twenty years."
You surely know about the institution of reciting a daily portion of Tehillim after Shacharis each day of the month; this is customary practice. It is also appropriate that those who have not checked their tefillin within twelve months should do so now.
Blessings for success in learning our holy Torah — Torah of truth — so that your study matches our Sages' instruction: learning that leads to practical fulfillment of mitzvos with extra care. May all your heartfelt wishes be fulfilled for good and blessing.
