Haraha"g vavac"h iy"a num oseik b-tzt"z, baal meretz u-baal middot etc. Pinchas Mordechai shlita

Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letters in which you propose that I participate in a collection of essays dedicated to matters of teshuvah: In general, this is not the custom of the House of the Rebbe—my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—and it is our ancestral tradition. Nevertheless, due to the great importance of the matter and out of respect for you, I will take this opportunity to express—at least briefly—the feelings I have shared verbally on several occasions, including at public gatherings.

To begin with the essence of teshuvah: In the style of our Rebbe the Alter Rebbe, author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch—this year being the 150th anniversary of his passing—the concept of teshuvah is not only about transgressions. Our Sages said one should spend all their days in teshuvah; rather, it is about restoring the soul. The soul is a part of Hashem and descends from a lofty height to a deep pit to be clothed in a body. Teshuvah means "the spirit returns to G‑d Who gave it," through self-sacrifice, surrendering one's will, etc.

Every era has its unique aspect. In our time—especially in recent years—we see a spiritual awakening described as "prophesying without knowing what they prophesy," called "returning to the sources." In truth and at its core this is as above: "the spirit returns to G‑d." This awakening is seen mainly among youth; for them it is even more significant because it comes with greater depth and strength. They are also unafraid of changing their lifestyle if they sense they are being given truth without compromise or embellishment.

In this country especially—the nature of youth differs from that in other countries where double effort was needed: first uprooting false ideas ingrained even among youth circles and only then planting proper views. Here youth are like untouched soil; all that’s needed is to present things as they are. It’s clear that those who present uncompromised truth find receptive hearts among youth.

Although I do not wish to criticize G‑d forbid, I must emphasize—with great sorrow—that until now there has been no proper use (as should be) made of this awakening by those who should be shepherds and spiritual guides for the people. Enough said.

Based on our Sages’ teaching that action is primary: all that was written above is not meant as a sermon but rather—hopefully—with your efforts and those like you there will be broad and energetic activity to strengthen this awakening and especially bring it into practical daily life for all whom your voice can reach.

When it comes to saving lives—even when there’s doubt or doubt upon doubt—one must act regardless.

May it be G‑d’s will that this campaign and activity reveal and arouse the inner point of every Jew’s soul—which has always been faithful with Him our G‑d—leading to actual fulfillment of Torah and mitzvot. As known from our great teacher Rambam: every Jew wants to do all mitzvot and avoid transgressions (Rambam Hilchot Gerushin end ch. 2).

If each person does all that depends on him—with strong confidence he acts as an emissary of Hashem Who rules everywhere—and speaks words from the heart (which enter the heart and have their effect), he is assured success.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that genuine inspiration comes from presenting uncompromised truth directly to Jewish youth, whose souls are naturally receptive when approached sincerely. Active outreach rooted in tradition can awaken inner faith and lead many toward Torah observance.
