Shalom u'Vrachah!

I acknowledge receipt of your letter from the 21st of Adar Rishon. As we stand close to the upcoming days of Purim—about which it is said 'Kiyemu v'kiblu haYehudim' (the Jews fulfilled and accepted), meaning they fulfilled what they had already accepted, nullifying the great protest against the Torah—may it be G‑d's will that everyone increases in the study of Nigleh (the revealed Torah) and Chassidus. This is especially true regarding studies conducted in a public manner. In particular, it can be said that learning the inner dimension of Torah sustains the study of Nigleh.

This is similar to how it is in general service of G‑d, as explained at length in Kuntres Etz HaChayim: service on the level of Yichuda Ila'ah (higher unification) sustains service on the level of Yichuda Tata'ah (lower unification). Then this will be drawn into action—the fulfillment of mitzvos—as our Sages teach: 'Great is study for it leads to action.' The concealments and obstructions will be nullified since both Nigleh and Pnimiyus are studied together, as is clear from the aforementioned Kuntres.

It can be said that this is also the way that practical mitzvos and their fulfillment are drawn into one's service of G‑d even in mundane matters—'In all your ways know Him.' Not only that, but even into the work of refining the three impure kelipos—transforming actual darkness into light. As our Sages explain: 'In all your ways know Him—even regarding a transgression if it is for a mitzvah,' such as Eliyahu on Mount Carmel. The elevation of this kind of service is understood from what my revered father-in-law the tzt"z writes: although 'in the place where baalei teshuvah stand, complete tzaddikim cannot stand,' through this above-mentioned service one reaches a level even higher than baalei teshuvah. All this should come specifically with joy and gladness of heart—in visible and apparent goodness.

This is indeed the special quality of Purim: joy involving one's body and its matters. Therefore, from all that was said above regarding practical service, it is certainly understood.

Blessings for good news and a joyous Purim and much success in holy work with tranquility.

M. Schneersohn
