Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 15th of Adar II.

At an auspicious time, they will mention you at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, of blessed memory, for the fulfillment of your heart's desires for good regarding the matter about which you write.

Since this concerns a young man in his teenage years, it is evident that words from friends his own age have much more influence than requests, urgings, or commands from adults—even if those adults explain and persuade him. This is generally true for youth; all the more so if, as you wrote, this individual has a rebellious nature. Certainly among his friends there are some who can try to speak with him about this matter without him suspecting that they are doing so at your request or at your wife's request.

The recommended advice in such a case is to try to have him accept a role as a spiritual leader for a religious group or at least participate in leading such a group. In this way, he will be drawn to matters of religion without feeling that it is being done intentionally or for its own sake.

Seemingly what follows is not relevant right now; nevertheless, through clarification the situation will become clearer. That is: clarify the nature and conduct of his parents and especially whether he was born in purity. The benefit now is that since matters of Torah and mitzvos also affect the past, special and focused action now in an area where Heaven forbid there was negative influence can improve and correct the situation.

Blessings for good news in all the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that peer influence is most effective with youth—especially those with rebellious tendencies—and recommends involving them in spiritual leadership roles. He emphasizes that present Torah actions can positively impact even past circumstances.
