Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from Erev Shabbat Kodesh asking when to study Tanya—whether before prayer or before going to sleep—truly, in such a case it is necessary at both times. However, primarily it should be in the morning before prayer, since this study adds to the prayer and its essence (see also Rambam Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah, beginning of chapter 2, and Rabbeinu HaZaken in the introduction to the Siddur, "HaKol Kol Yaakov"). Prayer gives vitality for the entire day—not only regarding mundane matters, which through prayer are approached in a completely different manner, but also as is known regarding Torah study. As in the prayer of Abba Binyamin: "May my prayer be close to my bed" (see Likkutei Torah Berachah 96b).
With blessings for good news.
In the name of the Rebbe Shlita
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while studying Tanya both before prayer and before bedtime is beneficial, it is especially important to do so before morning prayers. This prepares one spiritually for prayer and infuses vitality into all aspects of daily life.
