Shalom u'Vrachah!
On the joyful occasion of the "thirteen-year" celebration of your rabbinic position at the holy congregation Beit HaKnesset and Beit HaMidrash "Reb Meir Simcha HaKohen"—on the upcoming Motzaei Shabbat Kodesh—I send you, the esteemed president, gabbaim, and all members, my greetings and blessing.
The events of the week are, as is known, connected to the weekly Torah portion. Just as this celebration takes place at the start of Parshat Toldot, we can find a lesson right in its opening verse: Yitzchak ben Avraham, Avraham holid et Yitzchak (Yitzchak son of Avraham; Avraham fathered Yitzchak). The repetition—“Yitzchak the son of Avraham; Avraham fathered Yitzchak”—in our holy Torah (and Torah means instruction and guidance for daily life) underscores the perfect bond between Jewish generations: parents and children.
We often hear that children take after their fine fathers and grandfathers; this is only the aspect of “Yitzchak ben Avraham.” There must also be “Avraham holid et Yitzchak,” meaning that fathers and grandfathers should have true Jewish pride and nachas from their children and grandchildren. Not only should children have “zechut avot” (merit of ancestors), but parents should also have “zechut banim” (merit from their children).
This is essentially the inner purpose of a synagogue–study hall: it should serve not only as a holy place for prayer and study but also so that its holiness is transmitted into and connects with the homes of its members—from very young to very old. This is also the task of the rabbi and spiritual leader: that the entire community—young men to elders, infants to women—both in shul and at home—should be permeated and unified by the light of Torah and mitzvot, growing as a complete community in every sense of “Yitzchak ben Avraham; Avraham holid et Yitzchak.”
This is realized through full cooperation between rabbi, leaders, and members of the community.
May Hashem bless you all that your previous years’ success should grow ever more for many good years—both materially and spiritually together.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that true communal growth comes when both generations inspire each other with Torah values. A synagogue’s influence must extend into every member’s home through unity among leaders and members alike.
