Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 26th of Elul, in which you raise several matters, here is my reply—at least briefly.

a) The general conduct of a Jewish man and woman must always be in ways of pleasantness and peace; this is the path of Torah (which means instruction), as it is written: Deracheha Darchei Noam v'Chol Netivoteha Shalom ("Her ways are ways of pleasantness and all her paths are peace").

b) It is understood that a student must listen to their teachers, as explained in many places—including Shulchan Aruch, laws of honoring one's teacher.

c) What you write regarding the Nusach AriZal is correct: he established his nusach as a compilation from several versions in a way that would be fitting for all. This is explained at length in the book Likkutei Amarim by Rav HaMaggid of Mezritch—who was the teacher of the author of Sefer HaPeleh and Sefer HaMikneh, great Torah scholars whose works are studied in all yeshivot.

d) One who prays in a synagogue where a different nusach is used may pray individually with their own nusach; there is absolutely no concern about this [obviously if this individual does not serve as the shaliach tzibbur], but according to what was said above, this should be done pleasantly and without making an issue out of it.

e) Based on what was said above in section c), it is understood that one may switch from Nusach Ashkenaz to Sefard or from Sefard to Nusach AriZal (which is Chabad's nusach), but not the other way around. Therefore, it is proper for you to continue with the prayer nusach (as you write) that you have already begun and continue with. Certainly you will do so pleasantly and peacefully, and your teacher's full agreement—which you will surely also receive.

I hope that your conduct in all matters will match that of Bnot Yisrael—each called Bat Sarah Rivkah Rachel v'Leah—and now is the time to make good resolutions to increase in this area since these are the Ten Days of Teshuvah—a time of awakening—as it says: Dirshu Hashem b'Himatzo Kera'uhu b'Heyoto Karov ("Seek G‑d when He can be found; call Him when He is near").

At an auspicious time they will mention all those you write about at the holy resting place (tziyon hakadosh) of my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzukal nishmaso Eden (may his merit protect us), and may it be G‑d's will that you report good news about each one.

With blessings for sealing and final sealing for good,

In the name of my revered father-in-law the Rebbe shlita,
Secretary

P.S. To complete what was written above: there is absolutely no concern about praying one's own nusach even if the congregation uses another; this is explained in many places—including Piskei Dinim by Admor tzt"z Orach Chaim section 236—and it is known this was also the conduct of Baal HaPeleh and his teacher. The above—that one may switch from Ashkenaz to Sefard (and from Sefard to AriZal/Chabad), but not vice versa—is explained in Shut Minchat Elazar part I section 1 and in Kuntres Shiurei Mincha there. There he references several books on this topic. See also the next letter. For switching: see also above letter 37lb and its notes.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that one may switch prayer nusach toward AriZal/Chabad but not away from it; personal prayer customs should be maintained respectfully without causing discord. Respect for teachers remains essential throughout these decisions.
