Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from Tuesday, in which you write about your son, may he live and be well, who has become too independent, etc., you are surely aware that unfortunately this is a common occurrence among children who are given special attention (for whatever reason), especially when it is an only child. It is impossible for him not to sense that his feelings are being considered, etc. As I believe I have already written: in addition to the parents' efforts to minimize this phenomenon, much greater success comes from peer influence—directly and even more so indirectly—when he observes their conduct according to Torah and mitzvah, etc. This influence can come from classmates in his school, friends he plays with or visits at their homes. Certainly the doctor you consult regarding this matter will also advise all of the above. May it be G‑d's will that you succeed in all these efforts, in addition to success in improving your son's health physically as well as spiritually.
I hope—even though you do not mention it in your letters—that you have set times for studying the inner dimension of Torah which has been revealed in our generation as the teachings of Chassidus. As we have discussed several times before, this is extremely necessary—especially in our era and country—and particularly when additional blessing from Hashem is needed so that He bestows openly upon the soul and inner soul of a child who is "a limb of his father." There is nothing that stands in the way of willpower.
With honor and blessing for good news in all the above.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that while parental guidance is important, peer influence—especially by example—is often more effective for an only child's development. He also stresses the necessity of regular Chassidus study and reminds us that sincere willpower can overcome any obstacle.
