Shalom u'Vrachah!
In connection with the changes that have occurred in recent years, you considered selling your house so you could pay off your debts, give a sum to your children for arranging another apartment for themselves, and you conclude that if there is no apartment left for you, you are not concerned and are even prepared for this. You ask my opinion on this matter.
Based on what is clearly seen regarding the consequences when at your age one must live with others and rely on their help—even when it comes to the most devoted children—while everything may be fine at first, over time the relationship changes. It is understood that I do not agree with such an arrangement (and even if one would say that the debt is extremely burdensome and can only be paid by selling the house, it is essential that a suitable apartment be ready for you. That is, there should not be any time wasted—even for an important matter—because the money will already be invested in an apartment for you in such a way that you can live independently and see naturally that you do not need help from flesh and blood. This is clear. Based on this, it is understood that an even better arrangement would be to find a better way to pay off the debts).
Since your letter mentions that your loan carries interest, surely you did so based on a heter iska; if not G‑d forbid, then at least immediately upon receiving this letter correct it in the proper manner as instructed by a qualified rabbinic authority.
b) Regarding your request for a blessing for Mrs.... may she live and be well: At an auspicious time she will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal nabgam ziya for all her needs and especially for her health. It is understood and obvious that her parents should increase their involvement in Torah and mitzvah matters as much as possible since this increase is the channel and vessel to draw down and receive blessings from He Who heals all flesh and performs wonders—also regarding their daughter. It is also clear that the parents' conduct in their personal matters according to Torah and mitzvot has an effect and influence. In particular, their public conduct and matters affecting many people or benefiting many are even more impactful—as stated in Mishnah: "Whoever merits himself and brings merit to many," etc., and the opposite G‑d forbid.
May it be His will that you find suitable words so they come from the heart and thus enter her heart as well and have their effect.
It is appropriate to check all mezuzahs in her home to ensure they are all kosher according to halachah. She should also keep the custom of Jewish daughters to give charity before lighting candles every Friday evening and before every festival evening.
Summary
The Rebbe emphasizes maintaining independence rather than relying on others even during financial hardship. He encourages correcting any issues with interest-bearing loans according to halachah, strengthening Torah observance as a channel for blessings—especially regarding health—and upholding Jewish customs like checking mezuzahs and giving charity before candle lighting.
