Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 22nd of Sivan, in which you write regarding your son—may he live—whether it is advisable to continue the current unclear situation he finds himself in, etc., and also whether to consider separation; if he should first investigate whether another match will present itself and then give a get or not.
It is well known how much our Sages were concerned for the welfare of the daughters of Israel. From this it is understood that the reasoning to delay giving a get until another match presents itself has absolutely no place whatsoever. On the contrary, when the possibility of an agunah (a woman chained to her marriage) is removed, blessings from Hashem will increase as a result.
Regarding the matter itself: since several years have already passed in the current situation, it is appropriate now to try once more (to satisfy all opinions) concerning fostering closeness between the couple. If it becomes clear that there is no hope for this, then in my opinion there is no reason at all to keep the woman bound without any benefit for either side; on the contrary, this only increases anguish and so forth. It would have been better had this been done some time ago—but one does not cry over the past.
At an auspicious time I will mention all those you write about at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe—may his merit protect us—and may it be G‑d's will that you receive good news regarding each one of them.
With blessing for good news.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that delaying a get for practical reasons like waiting for another match is not justified. One should make sincere efforts toward reconciliation; however, if harmony cannot be restored after genuine attempts, it is wrong to leave either party in unnecessary distress.
