Mar Menachem Shmuel shiy" (Menachem Shmuel Raflovitz)
Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 4th of Iyar, in which you ask: Is it correct what is said that when our master the Alter Rebbe writes in his introduction to Tanya "from books," he is referring to the works of Maharal of Prague? This is indeed how chassidim interpret it when teaching Tanya, based on what they received from elder chassidim generation after generation. However, I did not hear this directly from my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe (of blessed memory), though in general, chassidic tradition is authoritative.
It should be noted that the phrase "from books and from scribes" also appears in the introduction to Part II of Tanya called Chinuch Katan, as well as in the wording of Shaar HaTanya. I heard from my revered father-in-law that the words "Sefer Likkutei Amarim... in a long and short way with G‑d's help" are those of our master the Alter Rebbe (and in chapter 42 [in reverse order]).
Incidentally, this same phrase also appears in Avodat HaKodesh by R. Meir Ibn Gabbai Part IV Chapter 1 and several times in Shnei Luchot HaBrit. [Found in a manuscript by a chassid: see Yerushalmi Yevamot chapter 4 halachah 11: Rava d'Matnita Rava d'Ulpana; see there.]
Regarding strengthening Chassidus: see the writings of my revered father-in-law about this matter at length, especially Kuntres Limud HaChassidus and Kuntres Torat HaChassidus. The main strengthening is according to the Mishnah's teaching that action is primary; here this means learning abundantly and actually doing so—so that not a day passes without studying this Torah, and on Shabbat even more so.
You surely know about the three well-known daily study cycles—Chumash, Tehillim, and Tanya—and keep them. We have often heard from my revered father-in-law that they are suited for every soul and are a segulah for many matters.
Blessings for good news.
Summary
The Rebbe clarifies traditions regarding Tanya's sources and urges consistent daily study of Chassidus as essential for spiritual growth. He highlights established study cycles as beneficial for everyone.
