Counting the Omer and Refining Character Traits through Chassidus

The letter discusses the unique way we count the Omer, emphasizing that each day's work builds upon the previous. The Rebbe explains that refining one's natural traits is easier after the revelation of Chassidus, drawing parallels to changes in mitzvah observance after Matan Torah.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

... And may it be G‑d's will — since we are now in the days of Sefirah (the counting of the Omer), and as explained in Chassidus that we do not count in a sequential manner (first day, second day), but rather "one day," "two days," meaning that yesterday's work remains complete and today adds further work to what was accomplished on day one, etc. — this should arouse each one of us immediately. It means ourselves personally, not just someone else. The demand is in a manner of "a sickle upon the standing grain," as Likkutei Torah (Bamidbar 15:4) says: natural traits are strong within a person by their nature and birth, and one must subdue and humble them with aspects of iskafya (self-restraint) and is'hapcha (transformation), wielding a sickle to uproot and destroy them, truly transforming them to nothingness so they become nullified and included within higher traits. See there. These ideas are brought in the discourse beginning with the giving of the Torah — "these which we heard from the mouth of Gevurah [the Almighty]" — see there. However, our inheritance is beautiful: now this work is easier than it was the first time — similar to what is explained about the advantage of matzah after midnight (after Matan Torah) compared to matzah before midnight (before Matan Torah). From this we also understand the difference between before and after the revelation of Chassidus regarding refining and purifying one's traits through chassidic paths...

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that personal refinement during Sefirah builds daily on prior achievements. Through Chassidus, transforming our natural traits has become more accessible than ever before.
