B"H, 20th of Marcheshvan, 5718
Brooklyn.
The Rabbi and Chassid, a G‑d-fearing man, honored and elevated, occupied with communal needs, our teacher Rabbi Chaim Shalom, may he live
Peace and blessing!
After a most prolonged interruption, your letter of the 18th of Marcheshvan was received.
May it be G‑d's will that from now on neither you nor any of the members of your family, may they live, know of any matter of sorrow or distress, G‑d forbid, and may the promise of נחמה בכפלים "consolation in double measure" be fulfilled (after נחמו נחמו עמי ... כי לקחה מיד ה' כפלים "Comfort, comfort My people ... for she has received from the hand of G‑d double," Yeshayahu 40:1–2; and see Eichah Rabbah 1:57). And according to what is explained in many places in Chassidus on the subject of כפלים לתושיה "double for sound wisdom" (Iyov 11:6), this is not merely twice in quantity, but much more than that, and with a change for the better in quality as well, as is understood also from the saying of our Sages, of blessed memory, in Shemos Rabbah, Parshas Ki Sisa, on the above verse* (there, in the second Tablets G‑d gave Moshe halachos, Midrash and Aggadah besides the Ten Commandments), and from the matter of נחמו נחמו "comfort, comfort" of the individual. And in our days, very soon indeed, we shall merit the נחמו נחמו "comfort, comfort" of the community as a whole (along the lines of what is explained in Iggeres HaKodesh, section 4), with the coming of our righteous Moshiach, soon.
With blessing for good news, always, all the days.
*) Beginning of section 46.
Publisher's notes
Rabbi Chaim Shalom (מו"ה חיים שלום): Segal, Jerusalem.
Sorrow and distress (צער ועגמ"נ): "When our father, the crown of our head, the Chassid (בנש"ק) Rabbi Shlomo Yehudah HaLevi, was taken from us."
Summary
This letter consoles a family after the passing of their father, blessing them to know no more sorrow and to see the promised double consolation, which, as Chassidus and the Midrash on the second Tablets show, is far greater in quantity and higher in quality; and the consolation of the individual leads to the "comfort, comfort" of all Israel with the coming of Moshiach.
