במענה על מכתבו מז' שבט, וכן הקודם לו שנתקבל באיחור זמן רב - הנה מ"ש שעדיין לא שמע ע"ד הצעה מתאימה בשבילו בעניני שידוכין, פלא הדבר, כי הרי אין הקב"ה מבקש אלא לפי כחו של אחד וכשעושים במרץ המתאים, היינו עשיית הכלי משפיעים מלמעלה הנצרך בזה ובפרט בעניני שידוכין, וכמ"ש ומה' אשה משכלת, ולכן קרוב בעיני בודאי שאינו מתעסק בזה כדרשת רז"ל כאדם המחזר אחרי אבדתו וגם כשמציעים ה"ה בגדר דמהיכי תיתי ומה היא חובתי ואעשנה ותו לא, ובמילא אין פלא שכשהאתערותא דלתתא באופן כזה אין תוצאות בהנוגע לפועל, ולמותר להאריך בדבר המובן ופשוט אשר לא טוב היות האדם כו' וכמבואר בכו"כ מקומות, ויה"ר שעכ"פ מכאן ולהבא היינו תיכף לקבלת מכתב זה יעשה בהנ"ל כדבעי ויהי' בהצלחה...

In response to your letter from the 7th of Shevat, as well as the previous one which was received after a long delay – you write that you still have not heard of a suitable suggestion for you regarding shidduchim. This is surprising, for the Holy One, blessed be He, only asks according to one's ability, and when one acts with appropriate energy—that is, making the proper vessel—Heaven provides what is needed in this matter, especially regarding shidduchim, as it is written: 'U'MeiHashem Isha Maskeles' (and from Hashem comes an understanding wife). Therefore, it seems clear to me that you are not engaging in this as our Sages require: like a person searching for his lost object. Even when suggestions are made, your approach is more like: 'Why should I? What is my obligation? I will do it and nothing more.' Naturally, when the arousal from below is of this nature, there are no practical results. There is no need to elaborate on something so obvious and simple—that it is not good for man to be alone—as explained in many places.
May it be G‑d's will that at least from now on—that is, immediately upon receiving this letter—you will act in these matters as appropriate and may you have success...

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that finding a shidduch requires active effort and personal initiative. When one pursues this seriously and energetically, G‑d responds with help from Above; passive or half-hearted involvement yields little result.
