Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the first of Toldos, in which you describe your situation and conduct and request my opinion on this: What I do not approve of is that you always study alone and also pray alone. You explain this by saying there is no one to study or pray with at a measured pace—just consider: you and your father-in-law have lived there for some time; is it really impossible that during all these months and years you could not have influenced at least some people to follow chassidic ways and study chassidus?
Especially since it is well known from my father-in-law, the Rebbe—of blessed memory—that efforts in outreach never return empty-handed. Even someone who can justifiably say about himself "Ani Yesheinah" (I am asleep), Scripture still testifies about him "V'libi Er" (but my heart is awake), especially regarding Torah and chassidic customs which are like light; their nature is to draw sparks toward them as long as the light is brought close to the sparks. Thus, it depends only on the person who already knows or at least has some connection to the light; his task is to bring the spark closer wherever he may be.
It is known from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, how he elaborated on the situation of one of the chassidim of the Rebbe Maharash who was sent off to a distant corner. When he complained about this to the Rebbe Maharash and explained how it was impossible for him to influence others there, the Rebbe Maharash answered: For your material livelihood, Hashem could have provided for you in a place with observant Jews. The fact that you were sent to a town where you are considered isolated means your purpose there is to influence your surroundings until gradually things become as they should be.
All these points apply also to you and your father-in-law who live in a city with many observant Jews among whom are many from Anash. Our Sages have already ruled: "Throw a stick into the air—it lands near its root," but one must throw it! If you begin this work—as our Rebbeim have assured—you will succeed.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that even when isolated or lacking companions for prayer or study, one must strive to inspire others toward chassidic practice. With effort and persistence, every Jew can positively influence their environment and achieve success in this holy work.
