זֹאת אֹומֶרֶת כִּי עִנְיַן הַיְחִידוּת הוּא לְבַרֵר אֶת מַצָבֹו, וְלִקְבֹועַ אֹופַן עַבֹודָתוֹ בְּסוּר מֵרַע וּלְקַרֵב אֶת הַמִדֹות הַטֹובֹות, וּלְהִתְקַשֵׁר בְּהִתְאַחְדוּת גְמוּרָה וְלִמְסֹור עַצְמֹו, אִיבֶּערְגֶעבֶּען זִיך מִיט אַלֶע רְצֹונֹות.
Yud Elul.
The great elder Chassidim of our father the Alter Rebbe would say that 'yechidus' means: clear, set, unique—these three explanations are sourced in the words of our Sages (in the teachings of our Rabbis of blessed memory): Shekalim chapter 6 mishnah 2, Yevamos 62a, Bereishis Rabbah chapter 20.
This means that the concept of yechidus is to clarify one’s situation, to establish the manner of his service in turning away from evil and drawing close to good traits, and to connect in complete unity and to give over oneself—surrendering all one’s desires.
