My grandfather once explained in a maamar the statement that Rabbi Elazar "would give a perutah to a poor man and then daven"[1]: davening must be with chayus, with life, and by giving tzedakah to a poor man before davening, and so giving him life, a great deal of chayus is added to the davening.
And he moved his hand from below upward, to indicate that the increase is wondrously great.
Many times before davening, my father would seek out a poor man to give him something to eat.
