Schneerson, Shmuel Menachem Mendel

שניאורסאהן, שמואל מנחם מענדל

Rabbi Shmuel Menachem Mendel Schneerson (19th of Tishrei 5688 – 10th of Tammuz 5779) was a relative of the Rebbe, one of the elders of the Chabad community in Jerusalem, a member of the management of Kollel Chabad, and a publisher of Jewish texts. He was born on the 19th of Tishrei 5688 (1927) to his father, Rabbi Yisrael Yosef Schneerson, and his mother, Shaashe Raizel Yocheved (née Eichenstein) from the Ziditchover dynasty.

In Elul 5707 (1947), he became engaged to his wife, Faiga Rivka, and they married six months later in Adar I 5708 (1948).

In preparation for the academic year 5718 (1957), he traveled to study at the Rebbe’s court and stayed there for six months. His departure and exit from Israel faced various delays due to both the Israeli government and U.S. immigration authorities. Rabbi Chaim Mordechai Isaac Hodakov intervened on his behalf, sending a special request letter to the American consulate to secure his entry into the U.S.

During his time at 770, the notable Purim 5718 (1958) farbrengen took place, where the Rebbe expressed unique statements and spoke to the Chassidim personally, extending many warm gestures. At one point during the farbrengen, the Rebbe mentioned, “My relative is here; let him come up and say l'chaim.”

Following the Rebbe's directive, he was appointed as a member of the management of Kollel Chabad as a representative of the 'Beis HaRav' family. Even a few years before his passing, he remained involved in managing the Kollel in Eretz Yisrael.

He passed away on Shabbat Parashat Balak, the 10th of Tammuz, 5779 (2019).
