ומענינא דיומא הרי מה טוב ומתאים – כדברי רבנו הזקן אודות פרשת ימים אלו, ימי אלול, בתור הכנה לראש-השנה, ובלשונו:
יובן על פי משל למלך שקודם בואו לעיר יוצאין אנשי העיר לקראתו ומקבלין פניו בשדה ואז רשאי כל מי שרוצה לצאת להקביל פניו והוא מקבל את כולם בסבר פנים יפות ומראה פנים שוחקות לכולם. ובלכתו העירה הרי הם הולכים אחריו כו'.

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter and thank you for the good news contained within it. May it be G‑d's will that He fulfill the desires of your heart for good—and even more than you requested—for the blessing of Hashem comes, as is stated in the traditional wording, from His full, open, holy, and generous hand.
Regarding the matter of these days: how fitting are the words of our master, the Alter Rebbe, about these days—days of Elul—as preparation for Rosh Hashanah. In his words: "It can be understood by way of a parable to a king who, before entering the city, its people go out to greet him and receive him in the field. Then anyone who wishes may go out to greet him; he receives everyone with a pleasant countenance and shows a smiling face to all. As he proceeds to the city they follow after him," etc.
May Hashem shine His face upon you etc., that He illuminate to a person with an inner vitality of His will. (Likkutei Torah, Parshat Re'eh, p. 32).
With esteem and honor and with blessings for being inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year in both material and spiritual matters together—and may this be accomplished already during Elul as above.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Elul is a unique opportunity to approach Hashem directly—like meeting a king in an open field—preparing ourselves spiritually for Rosh Hashanah with joy and sincerity.
