בקרני מר . . שזה מכמה דורות באה"ק ת"ו וגם מגזע בית הרב, מצאצאי – כמו שקוראים לה – הסבתא הרבנית מנוחה רחל בת אדמו"ר האמצעי, ועתה לומד חימא באוניברסיטה בירושלים, ולמרות חינוכו שלא גדל בישיבות וכיו"ב ולפי דבריו גם בית הוריו אינו אלא מסורתי, בא לידי מסקנא שרוצה לחיות מכאן ולהבא חיים דתיים על פי שו"ע במלא מובן המלה.
מובן אשר זקוק הוא לשני ענינים גם יחד: עידוד בהאמור ביחד עם מענה על קושיות שהחלו להתעורר אצלו להיותו רגיל בלימודי חול ולא הורגל עד עתה בחיים דתיים בחיי היום יום, וצריך להסביר ולתרץ סתירות ולבאר קושיות וכולי, וכן הוראה והדרכה איך לרכוש הידיעות הנחוצות לו מכאן ולהבא באופן המתאים לפניו.
בודאי אין כל צורך לבאר לדכוותי' דמר גודל הענין בסיוע בן ישראל לשוב אל מקורו, ובנקודה העקרית

הוא העיקר, ועל אחת כמה וכמה בנוגע להנ"ל. שלכן מובטחני שלמרות טרדותיו המרובות יעשה בזה ככל האפשר, כיון שלדעתי הוא המוכשר ביותר להביא את הנ"ל לפועל.
בטחוני חזק הי' עד כדי כך שנתתי להנ"ל את שמו בצירוף בקשה למסור פ"ש ממני וכן בקשה האמורה. ואצפה לקבל בשורות טובות מהתחלה בהאמור וכן ע"ד ההתקדמות בזה מזמן לזמן. וכן מובן וגם פשוט ע"ד רושמו הוא מהאברך הנ"ל בכלל, ובפרט בנוגע לרצונו האמור של האברך.
סימן השאלה ביחס לשם משפחתו של הנ"ל, מפני שאינני בטוח בזה כל כך. אבל בודאי האמור לעיל יספיק להכירו, בתוספת אשר הוריו דרים בחיפה והוא בירושלים. ונוגע זה גם לנידון דידן, שהרי סביבתו עד עתה וחבירו היו חילוניים, וקשה לדעת מראש עד כמה יפעול בעצמו לנתק הקשרים עמהם, ובפרט שלומדים בצו[ו]תא אחת באוניברסיטה, ובית הוריו הרי אינו על אתר. שעל פי זה עוד חשיבות יתרה לקישור הדוק עם האברך.
פשוט שאם ימצא מר חברים דתיים בשביל הנ"ל המתאימים גם לדרגת ההשכלה שלו יעשה בזה כפי הבנתו, שהרי כוונתי היא שלא אך ורק הוא בעצמו יטפל בזה, כי אם שהוא יהי' בעיקר המכוון וכו'.

In Kerenay Mr. ... who for several generations comes from a distinguished family and also from the lineage of the house of the Rebbe, descended—as she is called—from the grandmother Rebbetzin Menuchah Rachel daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe. Now Chima is studying at university in Jerusalem, and despite his upbringing not being in yeshivot and according to his words even his parents' home is only traditional, he has come to the conclusion that he wants to live from now on a religious life according to Shulchan Aruch in every sense of the word.
It is understood that he needs two things together: encouragement in this matter along with answers to questions that have begun to arise for him since he is used to secular studies and has not until now been accustomed to religious daily life. It is necessary to explain and resolve contradictions and clarify questions etc., as well as instruction and guidance on how to acquire the necessary knowledge for him going forward in a manner suitable for him.
Certainly there is no need to explain to you, sir, the greatness of helping a Jew return to his source, especially regarding action being primary—and all the more so concerning this individual. Therefore I am confident that despite your many preoccupations you will do everything possible in this matter, since in my opinion you are most suited to bring this about.
My confidence is so strong that I gave this individual your name along with a request to convey regards from me as well as this request. And I look forward to receiving good news about an initial start in this matter as well as continued progress from time to time.
It is also understood and obvious regarding the impression made on this Avrech in general, and especially regarding his aforementioned desire. The question mark regarding his family name is because I am not entirely sure about it. But certainly what was said above will suffice to identify him, adding that his parents live in Haifa and he is in Jerusalem.
This also relates to our topic: until now his environment and friends were secular, and it is hard to know in advance how much he will act on his own initiative to sever ties with them—especially since they study together at university—and his parents are not local. Therefore there is even greater importance for close connection with the Avrech.
It goes without saying that if you find religious friends suitable for him also according to his educational level you should act accordingly; my intention is not that only you yourself should deal with this but rather that you should be primarily responsible etc.
On a related note: you surely know of my great interest and effort regarding the Tefillin campaign. And since—to my great surprise—there have been opponents of this effort for various strange reasons, perhaps the instruction here is that everyone suitable should add their own input about its importance and value generally—and especially in our times. It would be appropriate if you too use your channels—both orally before your audience and those influenced by you, as well as through your publications—to spread and publicize its importance etc.
