Naming a Baby Girl and the Timing of the Ceremony

The Rebbe explains that the custom is to name a newborn girl at the earliest possible Torah reading. Delaying the naming requires justification, as the name is vital to a person's life. The Rebbe also notes that traditions must be based on reliable sources.

... מנהגנו לקרות שם לבת שנולדה - בקרה"ת הכי קרובה. והרוצה לאחר קריאת השם, שהוא חיות האדם - עליו להביא ראי'. והרי אמרז"ל דאשה כמאן דמהילא דמיא, ופשיטא שהכוונה תיכף בלידתה.

...Our custom is to give a name to a newborn girl at the nearest Torah reading. Anyone who wishes to delay the naming—which is considered the life-force of a person—must bring proof. Our Sages said that a woman is like someone who is circumcised, and it is obvious that this refers to immediately upon her birth. I have seen what was printed about this in Sefer Taamei HaMinhagim—but we are not responsible for rumors. Our custom: see also above, volume 18, letter 7754, and what is cited in the notes there. Our Sages said: Avodah Zarah 27a.
