בת"ח מאשר הנני קבלת שני הספרים, ובאתי במכתב במיוחד, כיון שכנראה גם בהנ"ל ניכר מאמר חז"ל הכל תלוי במזל ואפילו ס"ת שבהיכל ובכגו"ד אפילו ספר שנדפס, כוונתי להספר יסוד ושרש העבודה אף שהדפסתו באותיות מאירות וכו' אבל אופן ההו"ל הוא שחסר אזנים לקופה וחסר ביותר, והרי דורנו זה הורגל שצריך להושיט הכל בקנה ושיהי' מוכן לקליטה מבלי כל טרחה ועאכו"כ טרחה יתירה.
והרי בספר הנ"ל המחזיק קרוב לת"ק עמודים, אין מפתח כלל ואפילו מפתח פשוט, ז.א. ציון התחלה של כל שער ופרק וכו' ולדעתי באם הכוונה ככתוב בהקדמה שיהי' שייך לחוג רחב, מוכרח ג"כ תוכן ענינים עכ"פ כללי ומה טוב פרטי, וכל המפרט בכגון דא ה"ז משובח.
מובן שע"פ ציווי חז"ל אין צועקין על העבר, לא הייתי כותב כל הנ"ל באם לא ראיתי דרך לתקון הגרעון בחלקו (חשוב) עכ"פ והוא ע"י הדפסה עלון של איזה עמודים ותוכנו אזנים הנ"ל ולצרפו לכל ספר הנשלח, וק"ל.

The esteemed vavac"h iy"a nu"n one engaged in tzt"z, a man of many deeds, Rabbi Shaar Yashuv HaKohen shiy'.
In response to your notification regarding the receipt of two books, I am writing this letter specifically because it seems that even here the saying of our Sages applies: "Everything depends on mazal, even a Sefer Torah in the Ark." Similarly, even a printed book—my intention is regarding the sefer Yesod VeShoresh HaAvodah—even though its printing is with illuminated letters and so forth, the manner in which it was published is lacking 'ears for the basket' and is missing greatly. Our generation has become accustomed to needing everything handed over on a platter and ready for absorption without any effort—certainly without extra effort. In this aforementioned sefer, which holds close to five hundred pages, there is no index at all—not even a simple one; that is, not even an indication of where each section or chapter begins. In my opinion, if—as stated in the introduction—the intention is for it to be relevant to a wide circle, then it is absolutely necessary to have at least a general table of contents and preferably a detailed one. The more detailed in such matters, the better.
It is understood according to our Sages' instruction that we do not cry over what has already happened; I would not write all of the above if I did not see a way to correct this deficiency at least partially (an important part). This can be done by printing a pamphlet of several pages whose content would be these aforementioned 'ears,' and attaching it to every book sent out. This should suffice.

Summary
The Rebbe teaches that Torah works should be made as accessible as possible for readers by including indexes or tables of contents. Even after publication, efforts should be made to address deficiencies so that more people can benefit from these important works.
