Responding to Family Opposition When Choosing a Torah Life

The Rebbe advises those facing family opposition after choosing a Torah life to avoid arguments, focus on family matters in correspondence, ignore insults, and persist in Torah study. Success in learning is the best response, and practical issues like Pesach or appearance should be addressed as needed.

Shalom u'Vrachah! [Kislev 5721?]

In our times, many of those who have chosen life, the path of our Torah and its commandments, face confusion and obstacles from family members who want them to abandon this choice. The most suitable and peaceful approach is: 1) Do not enter into debates or arguments at all and avoid conflict over this matter. Write only about family matters and similar topics—after informing them once that you have firmly chosen the path of Torah (and this has already been communicated). 2) Do not be disturbed by insults or similar things in their letters (as mentioned above, many like you receive such letters). Especially since you know that this is done in the hope that perhaps they will force you to leave the path of Torah and mitzvos. 3) Study with diligence and perseverance. Your success in this will be the best answer to the claims written to you. In the end, this will also be accepted by those making these claims.

Regarding Pesach—consider it when the time approaches. Regarding beard and payos—decide on the style and whether or how to inform them after you receive responses to each of your letters and reply accordingly, etc.

Written on the margin of a letter from 25 Kislev 5721.
