Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter from the 8th of Kislev, in which you write about a position being offered to you and the positive and negative aspects of it, and you ask my opinion.
Regarding the institution being established: surely you know there were disagreements about whether it is desirable at all, but as you wrote, there is now a decision.
b) Every new institution, until its form solidifies naturally, will certainly have many disagreements about its details and even its general direction.
c) On the other hand, the institution is very necessary and this is already recognized, as proven by the above decision. Therefore:
d) If you are independent and want to work for strengthening and spreading Judaism without being deterred by the difficulties involved [and as is explained in holy books, the greater the matter in holiness, the more obstacles arise], and you have the strength to begin this work and continue until completion—again, without being affected by disagreements so long as the goal is realized—it is very proper that you accept this offer and act with energy appropriate to the importance of the matter.
e) If on the other hand you seek matters that do not tire you or—more delicately—wish for free time for your own spiritual pursuits as a private individual (such as studying Torah peacefully without distractions), even entering into discussions with some truly involved in tzt"z does not guarantee agreement among them; thus it is clear that such a lifestyle will not be found in this type of position.
I do not know your character or those who influence you, but surely you know that according to Chabad custom this kind of position is viewed as one of the most beautiful ways to fulfill the will of the Creator who gave Torah and mitzvos. This is also based on explicit halachah: a mitzvah that cannot be done by others takes precedence etc.
On this occasion—since everything happens by Divine Providence—I must (and am privileged to) urge you about establishing fixed times for studying inner Torah teachings revealed in Chassidus. If at all times and places this was necessary, how much more so in our era and especially in Eretz HaKodesh.
Blessings for good news.
P.S. As requested, this letter was sent out of order.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that communal responsibility often involves overcoming disagreements and personal comfort for a higher purpose. Accepting positions that serve Jewish continuity is praiseworthy when approached with dedication and regular study of Chassidus strengthens one’s mission.
