Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 17th of Tammuz—may it soon be transformed to joy and happiness—regarding your son... may he live, and his future arrangements.

It seems that in our conversation, even though it was brief, I expressed my opinion that for now he should not be sent away from home, since surely there will not be supervision elsewhere as there can be at home. However, in order to avoid special pampering—and more importantly, to strengthen his motivation—it is advisable to provide him, in addition to his studies, with some communal responsibility where he will be the leader. For example: a group of children younger than him whom he will teach Torah subjects and similar activities. It is clearly seen that success in such matters increases motivation and independence. When his parents—may they live—supervise this closely, they will certainly be able from time to time to increase his responsibilities so that he progresses more and more.

It is understood that every increase in Torah and mitzvos—and regarding good and holy matters, no matter how good the situation is, there is always room for more since they are connected with the Holy One Blessed Be He Who is infinite—adds blessing from Hashem in all that a person and his household need.

With blessings for good news in all the above.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that keeping a child at home under parental guidance while giving him leadership roles fosters independence and growth. Increasing involvement in Torah and mitzvos brings greater Divine blessing for the family.
