... Regarding what you wrote about studying the inner dimension of Torah—it is understood and also obvious that one is obligated (and merits) to do so even before marriage. It is also clear that regarding the teachings of Chassidus—one must specifically learn from the books of those authors who received and transmitted the tradition personally, in an unbroken chain back to our teacher the Baal Shem Tov z"l, who revealed the teachings of Chassidus. And concerning the teachings of Kabbalah, specifically according to what Rav Chaim Vital wrote in his introduction to Shaar HaHakdamot, as is known that the halachah follows the Arizal and his disciples. In this way, this study differs from learning the revealed parts of Torah. See Zohar I:5a and elsewhere. Specifically in these authors' books; see also above, volume 14, letter #4495.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that studying Chassidus and Kabbalah is both an obligation and a privilege even before marriage. One should learn only from authentic sources with a direct tradition back to the Baal Shem Tov or Arizal.
