Shalom u'Vrachah!
I acknowledge receipt of your letter from 29/11, and at an auspicious time you and your son will be mentioned at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, in accordance with the content of your letter.
Regarding your son: First and foremost, one should try to influence him so that his playing should be only for very small amounts (cents), which will lessen his desire for it and bring clarity of mind to contemplate the undesirability of this behavior. By reflecting on this again and again, the habit will gradually weaken until it disappears entirely.
Especially since he has merited to be a student in the yeshivah of my father-in-law, the Rebbe zatzal, it is well known that our holy Torah rules that matters of holiness—Torah and mitzvos—are eternal and can never be lost; they must leave an impression that ultimately affects daily life.
May it be G‑d's will that just as you have brought this request before me—and also regarding your other matters—you should soon share good news about them as well, with true nachas, which is Jewish nachas from children and grandchildren.
Summary
The Rebbe teaches that persistent reflection and gradual reduction can help overcome negative habits like gambling. The lasting influence of Torah learning ensures positive change in daily life, leading to genuine Jewish nachas from one's children.
