מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מיום השלישי, וכיון אשר שמא מילתא היא ושייך לגזע רבנו הזקן בעל התניא (פוסק בנסתר דתורה) והשולחן ערוך (פוסק בנגלה דתורה) תקותי חזקה אשר גזע צור מחצבתו ניכר במעשה ובפועל, ז.א. אשר נוסף על הנהגה הנדרשת מכל אחד ואחד מבני ישראל לדתו ותורתו, הרי בני משפחת הרב עליהם להוסיף ולהדר בזה כמובן, וזכות אבותיהם מסייעתם למלאות גם את זה, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.
אתענין לדעת אם נשמר מהוריו (או ששמע) ומקרוביו איזה זכרונות ימי קדם, בכתב ידם או רשימות מאחרים, ות"ח על ההודעה בזה.

I hereby acknowledge receipt of your letter from Tuesday. Since this is a significant matter and you are connected to the lineage of our master the Alter Rebbe, author of the Tanya (decisor in the hidden aspects of Torah) and the Shulchan Aruch (decisor in the revealed aspects of Torah), my strong hope is that the source from which you are hewn will be evident in deed and action. That is to say: in addition to the conduct required from every Jew according to his faith and Torah, members of a rabbinic family must add and excel in this as is self-evident. The merit of your ancestors will assist you in fulfilling this as well, for nothing stands in the way of willpower.
I am interested to know if anything has been preserved from your parents (or that you have heard) or from your relatives—any memories from earlier times, either in their handwriting or notes from others. Thank you very much for informing me about this.

In response to your question about your family's genealogy among the Schneersohns—it is proper that you clarify locally in Eretz HaKodesh regarding your father's identity (of blessed memory) with what is brought in Sefer Toldos Mishpachat HaRav MiLiyadi—(by M.S. Slonim): Chaim son of Pinchas (who passed away in Jerusalem 1908), son of Reb Nachum Yosef and Sarah Rivka daughter of Harav Hachasid etc. etc. Moshe son of our master the Alter Rebbe.
