Shalom u'Vrachah!
In response to your letter and following the New Year blessing you surely received already.
a) Regarding what you wrote about the two-hundredth anniversary of the passing (yahrzeit) of the Baal Shem Tov. The most crucial point to emphasize is to dispel the mistaken belief that all of the Baal Shem Tov's teachings are only "Derachmana Liba Ba'i" (the Merciful One desires the heart), and not G‑d forbid as per the Mishnah ruling that "action is primary." As a result of this misconception, people come to certain conclusions, etc. As mentioned above, it is necessary to stress that G‑d forbid the Baal Shem Tov did not relax even a hair's breadth from even a minor detail of rabbinic law; rather, he added emphasis on the importance of intention. Furthermore, every single Jew has been given full ability to unite with his Creator through Torah and mitzvos—not only those born with intellectual talent for deep Torah study—but everyone is obligated in actual mitzvah observance. And everyone, in the words of Rabbeinu HaZaken (the Alter Rebbe), according to his intellectual capacity and soul root, is also obligated in all four levels of Torah study (Pardes).
b) Regarding your comments about proposals to involve schoolchildren in various parades and gatherings: In general I am not pleased with such matters since we do not interrupt children's Torah study even for building the Beis HaMikdash—how much more so for other things. Exceptions are only when participation has educational value; after all, a student's learning is not only through speech but also through actions and such activities. In fact, it is evident that these experiences are engraved more deeply in a student's soul. The practical outcome is that before any desirable participation there must be an explanation from the teacher or counselor about its inner purpose. From this it is also understood how much caution is needed in such cases since there is always a possibility that a student will hear another explanation from someone else involved in the event—as you mention in your letter—that could lead to an opposite conclusion. As you also note: where there is doubt in such matters it is better to refrain from action. Regarding your point about not separating from the community: sometimes one should emphasize even more strongly the importance of a worldview or approach—even if it means separating from the community—rather than being swayed by what many others say differently.
c) Regarding what you wrote about your son who has not completely recovered from what he experiences—even though his condition has greatly improved compared to before: Surely the doctor explained that this depends at least significantly on his nervous system background; when there is improvement and strengthening and self-training etc., there is improvement in this matter as well. However, to further increase improvement and eliminate the issue entirely there are several remedies doctors prescribe—such as reducing food intake and obviously drinking close to bedtime etc.
d) Regarding what you wrote about preventing pregnancy: Our Torah—from the word "hora'ah" (instruction)—is a Torah of life (including life not only in the World to Come but also primarily in this world; after all "it is not in heaven"). The matter of blood pressure changes over time and depends on excitement level and mood generally etc., and distraction reduces it considerably; moreover, doctors will explain that thousands upon thousands with higher-than-normal blood pressure have children perfectly well etc. The main point here: any human intervention in such matters—which belong solely to the Creator—is contrary to simple logic and not just contrary to Torah perspective. There are additional points but I will mention only two: (1) In our generation each person is like a brand saved from fires of destruction—G‑d forbid—and must fulfill not only what was done by those martyred for sanctifying G‑d's name but mainly must fulfill also increasing Jewish numbers literally; (2) In our times when everyone seeks excuses—even strange ones—to make life easier for themselves, there is great concern that such conduct will influence others similarly since blood pressure reasons are not widely known nor questioned—people simply cite observed behavior as proof.
May it be G‑d's will that you share good news regarding all these matters and your success in holy work—education on purity—and whoever adds merits additional blessings.
Summary
This letter teaches us to value both intention and action in serving G‑d; educational activities should be carefully considered for their impact; health improvements require both medical advice and personal effort; family planning decisions must align with Torah values above personal reasoning.
