Shalom u'Vrachah!

In response to your letter from the 25th of Nissan (and those after it), which concluded with a question: how should one ask the Creator, may He be blessed, for what a person and his family need, and also for atonement for undesirable matters in the past, etc.

This has already been stated in our holy Torah—a Torah of life in its literal sense in our world—in Chassidus works and in books of Mussar. The central point is complete regret over undesirable matters of the past and a good resolution for the future—a resolution that one begins to implement immediately in daily life through a lifestyle based on the guidance of our Torah of life. For it is a remedy for both the great world and the small world—that is, man—and brings about fulfillment of one's needs and wishes for good.

However, sometimes the Creator and Ruler of the world tests a Jew, as it is written: "Ki Menaseh Hashem Elokeichem Etchem Lada'at Hayeshchem Ohavim..." (For Hashem your G‑d tests you to know if you love Him...) And it is already stated: "HaElokim Asah Et HaAdam Yashar" (G‑d made man upright), meaning He gave him clear and straightforward instructions in His Torah. Therefore it is astonishing and surprising that people seek many calculations, interpretations, and hints that do not fit these instructions.

Furthermore, since Hashem demands this from each of us, He certainly first gives us the strength to fulfill this demand completely—and moreover—to do so with joy and gladness of heart. This is what our King, the Holy One Blessed Be He, asks from us—as stated by Rambam at the end of Hilchos Lulav in Sefer Yad HaChazakah.

Blessings for good news on behalf of the Rebbe Shlita's secretary.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that heartfelt regret for past errors combined with immediate positive action according to Torah brings both atonement and fulfillment of one's needs. Hashem provides us with all necessary strength—so we can serve Him joyfully.
