(ובאמת אין פלא באי ידיעתו זו, כי הוא מתאים למרז"ל שכן הוא אצל כל בנ"א, שאין אדם יודע במה משתכר, ויעיין באגה"ק לרבנו הזקן ריש סי' כ"ב, שהושווה אי ידיעה זו לאי הידיעה מלכות בית דוד מתי תחזור, אלא שישנם כאלו המרמים את עצמם ומתברכים בלבבם שיודע ברור העתיד להיות באופן הפרנסה שלהם ושל ב"ב. ובהנוגע לפועל), הרי כיון שהוא בן י"ח טוב ביותר בשבילו לא רק ברוחניות אלא גם בגשמיות שלא יבלבלוהו במחשבות אודות תכלית וכו' וילמוד במנוחה בשקידה ובהתמדה, והזן ומפרנס לכל בודאי הכין כבר צנור הפרנסה שלו, ומאי נפק"מ אם אינו ידוע לעת עתה מה הצנור ואופנו, והאב בפרט שזכה להתחנך בכותלי ישיבת תומכי תמימים, הרי עליו להודות ולהלל להשי"ת, שלמרות כל ההעלמות הסתרים והשמדות ר"ל הצליחו השי"ת בבן יושב על התורה והעבודה מקיים תכלית בריאתו של האדם שהוא לשמש את קונו.
ולפלא שתיכף כשכותב אודות בנו השני שאין לו חוש בהתמדה כפי שכותב ובמילא כמה זמן נתבטל אצלו אף שהוא בעל כשרון, לא מצאתי במכתבו שגם זה מעיק לו, והלואי שהי' מתבונן איך לתקן את עניני בנו זה ולא לשנות הנהגת בנו הבכור, מובן שאין כוונתי בהנ"ל להטיף מוסר ח"ו אלא כיון ששאל חוות דעתי מוכרחני לתאר הענינים כפי שאני רואה אותם והוא כנ"ל.
כבקשתו אזכירו את זוגתו ובניהם שיחיו על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, ובטח יעורר ר"ר לבריאות כל הנ"ל, ואשר הוא וזוגתו שיחיו יזכו לראות בבניהם רוב נחת חסידותי על ידי שיהיו יראי שמים חסידים ולומדים.

בשאלתו איך להבין מה שנזכר לפעמים בחסידות ענינים שלכאורה הם נגד נסיונות הטבע. - הנה אין כל הענינים שוים בזה, ורובא דרובא הרי דוקא בזמן האחרון נתברר שגם החוקרים שלא מבני ישראל מסכימים להמובא בספרי ישראל ולא רק בחסידות אלא אפילו בספרי חוקרי ישראל.

...Regarding what you wrote about your son... that it bothers you that he does not know secular studies and therefore you worry about how he will manage in the future. (In truth, his lack of knowledge is not surprising, for it fits with what our Sages say is the case for all people: no one knows how they will earn a living. See Iggeres HaKodesh of our master the Alter Rebbe at the beginning of section 22, where this lack of knowledge is compared to not knowing when the kingdom of Beis David will return. There are those who deceive themselves and convince themselves that they know clearly what their future livelihood will be for themselves and their families. But practically speaking), since he is eighteen years old it is best for him—not only spiritually but also materially—not to be disturbed by thoughts about his future purpose etc., but rather to study calmly with diligence and consistency. The One Who sustains and provides for all has surely already prepared his channel of livelihood; what difference does it make if we do not yet know what that channel is or how it will come? And you as a father—especially since you merited to be educated within the walls of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim—should thank and praise Hashem that despite all concealments, obstacles, and persecutions (G‑d forbid), Hashem has granted success in having a son who sits immersed in Torah and service, fulfilling the ultimate purpose of man's creation: to serve his Creator.
It is surprising that immediately after writing about your second son—that he lacks diligence as you wrote, and therefore has wasted some time even though he is talented—I did not find in your letter that this also troubles you. If only you would reflect on how to improve matters with this son as well, rather than changing the conduct of your eldest! Understand that my intention here is not to rebuke—G‑d forbid—but since you asked my opinion I am compelled to describe matters as I see them, as above.
As per your request I will mention your wife and children at the holy resting place of my revered father-in-law the Rebbe zatzal nishmaso Eden; surely he will arouse abundant mercy for health for all mentioned above. May you and your wife merit to see much chassidic nachas from your children by them being G‑d-fearing chassidim and diligent learners.

P.S. In your question about how to understand things mentioned in Chassidus which seem contrary to natural experience: Not all matters are alike in this regard; but in most cases nowadays even non-Jewish scholars agree with what is brought in Jewish books—not only Chassidus but even works by Jewish scholars.
