Shalom u'Vrachah!

At the end of last summer I wrote to you regarding your conduct, particularly about fasting, and until now I have not received a response from you on this matter. Likewise, I do not know about your approach to study and your engagement in the service of prayer. I am writing now to encourage you and request that you inform me about these matters promptly. Surely you are adding strength and vigor in keeping the order of study in Nigleh and Chassidus as well as in the service of prayer. It is understood that there is no contradiction between this and maintaining bodily health—for both are within a person's ability, as Rambam writes (chapter 4 of Hilchos Deos), 'Maintaining a healthy body is part of the ways of Hashem,' and it all depends on the intention of the heart.

In general, every chassid—and especially a student in the higher classes of yeshivah—serves as an example for others, particularly for students in lower classes. Since this responsibility is very great, he is given very great abilities as well; he can even be "overflowing so as to cause others to overflow." It depends only on him to bring this from potential (which is already present and close to being revealed) into actual good deeds—in Ner Mitzvah (the candle of mitzvah), Torah Or (the light of Torah), and the illumination within Torah—that is, Toras HaChassidus.

I await good news regarding all the above.

Summary

The Rebbe encourages balancing diligent Torah study and prayer with caring for one's health. He reminds the recipient that as a senior student or chassid he serves as a role model for others and has been given special strengths to positively influence those around him.
