Revealing the Hidden Chasid and Fulfilling the Rebbe's Blessings

The Rebbe urges the recipient to reveal his chasidic qualities openly, not just inwardly, so he can inspire his children to be open chasidim as well. He emphasizes that the blessings of a tzaddik, especially a Rebbe, are everlasting and will be fulfilled completely.

Shalom u'Vrachah!

This is the wording of the message I asked your son to deliver to you: "L'Chaim! The father should be an open chasid; he is already a hidden chasid. He has, thank G‑d, chasidic children. But if he will be an open chasid, he will be able to help his children also become open chasidim."

The explanation is as follows: Knowing my father-in-law, the previous Rebbe, I am certain that he was a tzaddik. The words and actions of tzaddikim are true and everlasting; nothing from them is ever lost. I have heard many times from my father-in-law how much effort he invested in you and your wife—both directly in conversations with you and indirectly through his own ways, with a chapter of Tehillim and so on. I also heard from him about the hopes he had for your children, and it is evident even physically that these hopes are gradually being fulfilled more and more.

Based on this—that the actions of a tzaddik, especially a Rebbe, are never lost—I am certain that all the good things my father-in-law the Rebbe wanted to see in you will come to fruition. Part of this has already materialized, and I am sure everything will be revealed fully and completely.

Of course, this does not refer to simply fulfilling mitzvos as usual—which has always been present with you and in your home—but rather matters that go beyond the letter of the law (lifnim mishurat hadin), where there are no limits. No matter how much a created being achieves in this area, there is always room for more growth.

However, "a prisoner cannot free himself," so one needs help from another person. As the Mitteler Rebbe (son of Admor Hazaken) said: then it becomes two nefesh Elokit against one nefesh habehemit—especially when one has help from someone like my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit alone is great in addition to the merit of his holy ancestors who assist him.

This is what I meant by saying "he is already a hidden chasid; let him be an open chasid"—to act with utmost lifnim mishurat hadin. My father-in-law gave you strengths—not only through direct conversation but also privately in his room with a chapter of Tehillim and so on—but you have not yet fully utilized all these blessings openly because it is impossible to exhaust a tzaddik's blessing entirely.

Therefore I wished that all the blessings my father-in-law gave you—both in your presence and not—should be fulfilled completely. The greatest blessing for any person—and especially for a Jew—is nachas from one's children. As our Sages say: "A person envies everyone except his son," etc., so I explicitly stated that my father-in-law's blessing should be fulfilled for you: that your children should be open chasidim.

The reason I conveyed this blessing through your son at the farbrengen is because it says in seforim that when a Jew gives a blessing in front of ten Jews who answer Amen, it becomes a communal blessing—and wherever ten Jews gather together, the Shechinah rests (Sanhedrin 39a). Especially when there are many tens present at a Shabbos or Yom Tov meal—a seudas mitzvah—and particularly when it takes place in a holy place like a shul or beis midrash—I did not want to miss this opportunity. Seeing that we were among good friends who were inspired at seudah shlishit—a time called 'rava d'chol ravin' (as we say in Shabbos zemiros; its source is Zohar)—I took advantage so all those present would agree that my father-in-law's blessings should be fulfilled completely. One of the main points is to be chasidim—to act beyond the letter of the law and do good for others even if it may cause oneself some loss G‑d forbid—as Tosafot explains regarding what defines a chasid (Niddah 17a; see also Shabbat 63a).

With regards to all your family members—with blessings.

Summary

The Rebbe teaches that revealing one's inner chasidic qualities openly inspires others—especially one's children—to do likewise. The enduring power of a tzaddik's blessings ensures they will ultimately manifest fully when combined with communal support and personal effort beyond obligation.
